Questions from a Bucks fan

If the Clippers aren't able to find a replacement for Brand in free agency (meaning they don't land Emeka or Josh Smith), would they have any interest in Charlie Villanueva from the Bucks?

He is a 6'11" PF who has shown an ability to score and rebound. He can score in the low post some and is a tremendous outside shooter. He plays best in an up-tempo style. His negatives are a lack of effort on defense, tending to want to take outside shots rather than work for points he can get inside, and he underperformed when he was coming off the bench last year but played quite well as a starter so he needs to start or he is far less valuable.

He is still on his rookie contract and makes $3.4M next season.

The Bucks would probably trade him for almost nothing, seriously a future second round pick or a summer league player, if the Clippers took Dan Gadzuric with him (backup center who is due $20M over the next three years, who at one time was one of the most efficient rebounds in the league and was a shot blocker, hustle type player, but has regressed to a player or little value who struggles to not foul out of games instantly).

The Bucks have concerns about going over the luxury tax threshold over the next 3 seasons (with Jefferson, Redd, Bogut, and Williams all having large contracts). Also, they already have too many scorers and not enough defenders, so they are shopping Charlie to avoid the eventual fist fight between him and new coach Skiles.

Charlie V/Dan Gadz for 2015 second round pick? Just a thought, let me know if I am on crack.

I don't think Gadzuric would be included. Depends how desperate you are to get rid of Charlie. We could take him off your hands for a second. Don't know how that strikes you.

The point of the deal of the Bucks end is not to "get rid of Charlie", who should have at least some trade value because he can score and rebound, and is still on his rookie contract. The point was giving the Clippers a PF they might have use for nothing, in exchange for the Clippers using their large amounts of cap space to absorb the 3 years $20M remaining on Gadzuric's deal.

Just getting rid of Charlie alone would make no sense for the Bucks. They can just make him a bench player next season (or make him a healthy inactive player, Antoine Walker style), and if he can't deal with that, they can just not give him a qualifying offer next summer and he is gone for nothing and at the very least was an expiring contract.

What if the Clippers offered Cuttino Mobley + 2nd rounder for Gadz and C.Vill and a future First. Gets rid of 1 year off Gadz contract and makes a 9mil 2010 expiring for Milwaukee with a future 2nd at the cost of Villanueva, and the Clippers get a backup center (trying to look at the bright side here..) and a PF + a future first

I have been a big Charlie V fan ever since he joined the league out of UConn, and at his best he can be sensational, but I think he needs exactly the right coach to help him over his occasional lack of focus and his overall inconsistancy.
His gifts are truly impressive, and some coach needs to help him learn how to take best advantage of them every game. He seems to respond well to being believed in and leaned on at the same time, and having it made extremely clear repeatedly, forcefully, exactly, in detail, what is expected of him.
He is athletic, has tremendous hands, has good shooting range for his size --- he can really score when he is on --- and has the potential to be an excellent rebounder as he showed in the second half of last season when the coach made it clear that this was expected of him.
He also has the ability to be a brilliant passer with those huge, soft hands, but he doesn't have the mentality for this and needs a coach who can bring it out in him.
Charlie needs a ton of guidance to be the great player he could be. I think with a coach like Popovich (or Skiles, ironically, if he were willing) he could be an amazing player. I'm not sure Dunleavy could take this on, considering what else is on his plate right now.

Charlie is a good 3rd tier option for the Clippers PF vacancy. He's got skill, but is very inconsistent and hasn't improved much from his rookie year IMO. If I'm the Clippers, I need more stability at the 4 than Vilanueva can provide. If Charlie V were the backup PF behind Okafor for example, I think that would be a better role for him.
