Marcus Camby

I came across these paragraphs in the middle of some ESPN columns today:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By J.A. Adande | ESPN.com
LOS ANGELES -- Marcus Camby did something I'm not sure I've seen before. It wasn't just that he was still hustling, giving everything he had in another losing cause in another hopeless Clippers season. It was the way he did it, tapping a ball to keep it alive, then saving it back onto the court, all while falling backward out of bounds. We've all seen the over-the-shoulder saves. Even behind-the-back saves. I can't recall seeing a tap-while-falling-backward save.

"At that point I was just out there scrapping," Camby said. "We were in a rut a little bit, shots weren't falling for us, we weren't getting stops. I was just trying to get us an extra possession."

It resulted in a pair of free throws for Al Thornton. The Staples Center crowd gave Camby a standing ovation. Lately, with Baron Davis, Chris Kaman and Zach Randolph injured, and promising guard Eric Gordon subject to the ups and down of rookiedom, Camby is the only player who regularly justifies the cost of a ticket.

He leads the league in rebounding and is second in blocked shots.

The fact that he puts up such big numbers in stats that belong on the hustle board is a testament to him. No one in the NBA is working harder under more depressing circumstances.

He didn't want to get traded from Denver in the first place, but was sent to Los Angeles for next to nothing in a cost-cutting move by the Nuggets. Then the Clippers turned out to be much worse than he or anyone else could have expected. And just to add insult to injury (Camby's, inevitably?) the Nuggets have become even better since they traded for Chauncey Billups.

None of it has deterred Camby.

"I only know how to play one way, and that's all-out," Camby said. "I love to go out there and play, most importantly I love to go out and compete. The chips are down right now. We're missing a lot of key components, but me being a veteran on this team, a lot of young guys look up to me, so I just try to lead by example."

If the young Clippers didn't notice Camby's hustle on the floor Wednesday night, they could look in the box score and see his 18 rebounds, four blocked shots and two steals to go with 12 points.

It seems like there should be some reward for Camby's effort. Aren't 13.9 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game worth a trip to Phoenix for the All-Star Game?

"No, not with 8-30," Camby said. "No."

He'll have to settle for the gratitude of a handful of Clippers fans and a nation of fantasy basketball owners.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Count me right up there among the fans most grateful for this guy.
It's not only his marvellous blocks, and his sterling succession of double doubles that include amazing numbers of rebounds --- numbers which almost leave his steals and assists overlooked in game reports but not unappreciated here.
It's also his playing night after night with such total heart and commitment. He gives it all, and you can't doubt that watching him play.
As well, he is constantly doing those useful little things that will never show up in the stat lines, but which make a real difference to the team. Who ever talks about his outlet passes --- and yet they are invariably a thing of beauty.
I never took much interest in Camby other years, even though my son was telling me how great he was and how he was a Defensive Player of the Year. Now I'm sorry I haven't been watching him closely all along ---- my big loss. He's a real joy. I'm just so glad he's been playing for the Clippers this year and I've had a chance to see him and value him this way.

Thank you, Marcus Camby.

p.s. He leads the league in rebounds and is second only to Dwight Howard in blocks.

From the wiretap

No one would've blamed him for wanting to play for higher glory given his age and the depression our team is mired in, but for him to go out of his way to reassure the the few fans we have left shows he's a true class act - regardless of whether he ultimately stays or leaves.

Can we do a video tribute for Camby at Staples? He deserves it. A true pro.

Camby: 'I'm Here For Long Haul'
Jan 15, 2009 4:26 PM EST
Marcus Camby has heard his name mentioned in trade rumors this season, but he insists that he's in Los Angeles for the foreseeable future.

"I'm here for the long haul," Camby said. "Health is our issue. Myself, Chris (Kaman), Baron (Davis), Zach (Randolph). That core right there we should make the playoffs.

"So I'm still feeling confident. Right now it's a tough time for everybody. No one is playing at their best right now. We're not having great team success; it's frustrating at times. But for the most part, guys have really been in the ball games, they've battled, and they've competed with what we've got."

Too bad he rarely ever showed that kind of heart and hustle here in Denver. Maybe if he did, we wouldn't have thrown him to the side like a piece of trash, and he wouldn't have to be in a situation like that. Too bad for him.

That's what I like to see out of guys, when they play their hearts out no matter what the situation is. They never give up, it would be easy for him to give up on the season but he hasn't. He is truly a professional.

Camby's presence really gives me hope for our young players. You have other players on the team that have either slacked off, pouted or had a negative attitude. Camby otoh is definitely not happy with the team's performance either, but in response he'll just play even harder. Hopefully that mindset will rub off on some of the guys and stick.

Anyone know why Camby isn't playing today?
Thanks

Edit: Never mind, I checked the game thread. Is the ankle serious?

Camby is the man it has to really hurt that the Nuggets are one of the best teams in the West since he left.

From a column in SI.com 20th January (great that Camby enjoys teaching the young guys):

Camby has been one of the Clippers' few bright spots. He ranks second in the NBA in rebounding (13.8 through Sunday) and blocks (2.6) and is averaging 12.3 points (on 50.9 shooting from the field). Camby, though, downplays his chances of making the All-Star team for the first time.

"We're [9-30] right now, and when you base it on that, I don't feel I should be in Phoenix" for the Feb. 15 game, Camby said.

The 34-year-old's strong play, combined with the fact that his contract expires after next season and the Clippers also have Kaman at the center position, has fueled speculation that Camby could be dealt before the Feb. 19 trading deadline. But Camby isn't angling for a trade.

"I know a lot of teams have been calling, and it's always good to feel wanted," he said in a telephone interview. "If I have my preference, I would like to stay here."

After feeling burned by the Nuggets for their money-drive trade, Camby appreciates the opportunity to play mentor to a team trying to develop three rookies and last year's first-round pick, Thornton.

"When you give a constant effort on the glass, guys appreciate you for that," Camby said. "They see how much effort you're putting in, how bad you want to fight and win. That can be contagious; it can jolt a little life into other players and into the fans.

"I love going out there and battling against these young studs they have in this league. And the enjoyment I take in seeing our young players develop pretty much makes my day."

Wow, it's refreshing to read that he said he prefers to stay here. We share similar preferences!

Whether it's true or not, matters little to me right now, but I do like that he said that he would prefer to stay here.

I also hope that Camby stays, it's good that he wants to be here.
