We might have just received the largest trade asset that nobody has thought about. With all of the teams desperately trying to unload salary, should we now take advantage of that?

I just posted a similar topic on the trade board, but what does everyone here think we should do with our new TPE, generated by the difference in salaries between Z-Bo and Q-Rich.

Could try to increase cap room entirely by dealing off Al Thornton+Ricky Davis in a package to a team with a TPE and create a larger amount of room. That would create the possibility of a top free agent addition.

On the other hand the TPE could be a major addition in the sense that teams want to knock out major salary.

It would make the most sense just to keep the TPE and save more money ourselves.

I would use the TPE on a player that is 2010 friendly. Both Kyle Korver and Luke Ridnour are in the final year of their contracts and both guys would help us out next year. Their teams could move them for nothing and save a ton of money. Moving Korver would make it possible to resign Milsap.

Both of those guys would be solid for us, but i wouldn't help teams by trading our TPE for just them.
As teams are looking to get under the cap and try to keep their payroll under control, something extra is what we should be looking for.
For example, if Utah wants to unload Korver, so they can re-sign Millsap, then their own or(even better) that unprotected Knicks pick should come our way as well.

I actually forgot about the acquisition of a trade exception. It could definitely be very valuable, but obviously in keeping the team 2010 friendly one would have to be more selective in how it is used. I agree that trying to swing something like a draft pick into the move would be very wise.

I would target Utah. They desperately need to shed some payroll and they have that NYK '10 First.

The way to go may be for a future pick. Having a high first round pick next year is going to cost us around 3-5 million, which will cut into us being able to throw a max contract at someone.

You can make it work. You can split the TPE and add picks. Or you can trade Camby, Collins and Davis for Wallace with the 125% plus $100,000 rule and sign Pavlovic with the TPE

Traded Player Exception: If a team trades away a player with a higher salary than the player they acquire in return (we'll call this initial deal "Trade #1"), they receive what is called a Traded Player Exception, also known colloquially as a "Trade Exception". Teams with a trade exception have up to a year in which they can acquire more salary in other trades (Trade #2, #3, etc) than they send away, as long as the gulf in salaries for Trade #2, #3, etc are less than or equal to the difference in salary for Trade #1. This exception is particularly useful when teams trade draft picks straight-up for a player; since draft picks have no salary value, often the only way to get salaries to match is to use a trade exception, which allows trades to be made despite unbalanced salaries. It is also useful to compensate teams for losing free agents as they can do a sign and trade of that free agent to acquire a trade exception that can be used later. Note this exception is for single player trades only, though additional cash and draft picks can be part of the trade.
