If Thompson did get on base, Phelps would've been pinch hitting for Nieves. Who the hell would catch in the bottom inning?

Bad decision making, Joe...

I was thinking bruney, and now giamibi is out the game, and we got kevin thompson at the plate who would be overmatched by my 4 year old daughter!!!

This loss is on Torre. Bringing in Myers, bring in Visciano and having the infield in. What a disgraceful managing performance by Torre.

4 rings my ass... he can't manage a bullpen for crap.

Nobody will dare say this so I will ... A-Rod is looking for a walk with two guys behind him who are the weakest guys the Yankees could possibly put up there. No doubt this lefty had good stuff and is tough to pick up ... but when he's hitting a homerun EVERY AT BAT, he needs to want to swing the bat not draw a walk.

^ By the way, this really has nothing to do with A-Rod not coming through per se. It's about realizing he is 100% the man, even in the clutch, no matter what. Nobody has this man's talent, and he needs to say, "Hell no I'm not going to take a walk!" ... with two weak options behind me in the order.

They were pitching around him obviously. He took a hack at a pitch that was borderline.

Maybe thats the best way to pitch to AROD. Make him think you are pitching around him and confuse the hell out of him. He looked so stupid thinking that obvious strike was a ball

People are acting like he was getting hit around... he gave up a bloop to Cora and a bleeder that could have just gone foul to Crisp. The Varitek hit wasn't killed either..

...

Let's make something very clear here. Working the count is an invaluable asset for any player. If ARod goes up to the plate looking to crush the ball at any cost, and not reading pitches, he's doing a disservice to the team. People need to stop pretending they know every **** thought and mentality going through a player's head at any given moment.

Not exactly. I'm saying that with the game on the line and the relatively low chance that the two guys behind you are going to get it done ... that A-Rod should not look to be taking first base on a walk WHEN HE IS HOTTER THAN THE SUN, hitting many balls way out of the park.

You can ignore it if you wish but he started down the line on a 3-1 pitch, expecting/anticipating/desiring a walk to bring Thompson/Phelps to the plate.

To me, that's like the best player on the court (let's say MJ) passing up a decent look to win the game.

Let's not forget that the 3-1 pitch was a fairly clear strike - maybe not a 'fat' pitch, okay I accept that, but a pitch he could try to hit.

A great player, and he certainly could qualify with his skills, needs to want to take on that burden and not pass it to the next guy (especially when the next guy is not likely to get it done, let's be honest).

Again, it's not about failing (that will happen), and of course I am not arguing with A-Rod's production at all which is through the roof. I'm saying that the question about the man's heart and leadership are possibly not the 'illusion' that many of his defenders want us to believe.

I'm saying that there are still signs that the guy is not entirely comfortable with pressure ... at least not as much as he should be for a guy of his immense talent and a guy who is as absolutely rip-roaring hot as he is right now.

I'm sure the argument back is how could you say that when he's just won game after game after game with big hits ... fair enough. But yes, seeing a competitive leader who not just accepts pressure, but eats it up and delivers ... that is definitely not all about stats.

It's about body language and something intangible.

I think A-Rod has the talent, without doubt, to be that guy ... but a guy who craves pressure and who knows how good he really is does not try to get to first on a walk with the game on the line and Kevin Thompson due up.
