Question about Dallas Extensions?

Post#1 » by magicfan4life05 » Tue Jul 15, 2008 10:53 pm

Hey

I was watching sportscenter and they were talking to John Clayton and asking him how is dallas locking up all these players to extensions, where is the caproom coming from, and he said "it's coming from the new stadium next year" "the cowboys are locking up all their young players before the no cap season" so basically they won't lose any of their players to someone to outbids them in a no cap scenario.

I understand that part, but I don't get how they are "getting caproom from the new stadium next year" he said that's where they are getting money from...so I come from nba perspective where caproom you have to be under the salary cap....how do you get caproom from their new stadium??

or did I not understand correctly?

thanks

"I just think everybody needs to stop talking about it," Howard said. "There's more to life than free throws."

u probably didnt hear him right b/c a new stadium has nothing to do w/the cap situation

the only way we're able to do all this locking up of players is b/c jerry after years of being in cap hell has become a genius at handling the cap and finding little loop holes etc...

I think what you heard John Clayton say was what some people like to call a joke.

Guy A: The Cowboys have signed a lot of players to extensions this off season. Where is all of this money coming from?
Guy B: It's coming from the new stadium. HAHA

Not a funny joke, but a joke none the less.

The Cowboys have given out all of these contracts, and yet are still 10 million under this year's cap. Jerry just knows how to do what he does. That's really all you need to know.

John Clayton is not a funny guy or a jokester on ESPN. Je used to joke with Sean Salisbury when salisbury would insult him, but that has been a couple of years now. He might be projecting that jerry has extra money from the expected revenues from the new stadium, so in 2010, he can bust the cap. It would be interesting to see how much of this money is expected to be paid in that non cap year. That would give jerry the room to give out big contracts over a time frame and pay lots of it out in that year.

Jones has the money to give the signing bonuses from the new stadium. The extensions are just that extentions. They count against future caps not against todays. As a business owner it doesnt hurt me at all to give any employees raises that start in 2010. In fact I wish I could do what the NFL does and give them future raises and then fire them halfway into the contract and pay them nothing else.

Since the OP is a magic fan its pretty much the same as with Rashard Lewis. He signed a contract starting at what 17mill? he will make 24 mill one yr but the Magic dont hav eto get under the cap to pay it. They merely hav eto get under the cap for his 1st yr.
