A deal should be reached with Brackman so theres no concern there.

It would've been huge to sign Peavey and/or Carpenter, but oh well.

Regardless, with all of these signings, it is now an incredible draft class...arguably better than last years.

UPDATE, 3:37 p.m.: * * * BRACKMAN SIGNS WITH YANKEES * * *

Word is that the Yankees and Scott Boras have agreed on a deal that would pay the right-hander a minimum of $4.6 million and possibly as much as $13.8 million based on when he gets to the majors and whether he gives up basketball.

More on this as it becomes official later today.

Most likely, yes. As cmaff said, Montero is probably the guy right now but who knows if he sticks there. Montero has been very impressive in the GCL thus far, but is obviously a long time away.

I've read a lot of things that make it seem as though Weems may in fact be better than Romine down the road. Regardless, it is good to know that there are catching prospects in the system.

It's all about high ceiling guys and taking risks. You don't build a good farm system by taking MLB ready players in the early rounds.

Phil Hughes had injury issues, Joba Chamberlain had weight and shoulder issues when we drafted them....both are now the face of our pitching staff presumably for years to come. We're taking risks, but it's on big time potential.

Uhh the Yankees spent years from 1996 to 2003 picking "safe" players. I don't know why you brought up college players, that isn't the issue. Both Joba and Kennedy are college players. It's about ceiling. There are guys who are "low ceiling" guys but more likely to reach the majors, which is what the Yankees usually spent their early round picks on. Not until 2004 did that change, when they took a HS pitcher in Hughes, in 2005 and HS position player in CJ Henry. Sure he turned into nothing, but he had a ridiculous ceiling that if he reached it we would have had an all-star shortstop. Ian Kennedy and Joba were both high risk, high reward guys because of injury concerns. Both were top 10 talents and without injury concerns wouldn't have even been possibilities, just like Brackman.

I'm not sure why you brought up Street or Tex, those are not "low ceiling, high probability of reaching majors" type of guys. If you take risks, you will be rewarded. Hughes, Joba, Kennedy are just a couple. How about Betances? Sure he wasn't an early round pick, but almost every scout said he was a 100% lock to attend junior college, but the Yanks took a risk to see if they can sign him and did. Austin Jackson was committed to GT to play basketball, Yanks took a risk on him and that worked as well. Now we are being rewarded for those risks. So we took a risk on Brackman, a top 5 talent. If we passed on him we could've taken a guy whos ceiling was a #4 pitcher but he was a sure thing to reach the majors. Is that what you want? I don't.
