Considering he played pretty well and NFL OT's don't just grow on trees why cut him and pay 3M over his salary? Wouldnt the wise move be to keep the 3 OT's we had on case of injury. If we would safe $$$$ ok lay him go, but the numbers you post would lead me to keeping him.

We'd still have to replace him right? That means we'd pay Free 11M and another low end OT about 4M meaning we'd have 15M tied up in that roster spot. Financially it makes no sense.

I'm not sure where you get that # from on Free. If we cut Free he has like $4M in dead money. There is no chance he or Melton will be here at their current values. I'm sure we discuss significant reductions with both to keep them. No idea where I draw the line in the sand on either right now, but i'm fine with moving on from both if we find a better use for the $'s. Need to see what other plans we have first.

Carr is a tough one. If he is cut it will be post 6/1. He played pretty darn good the last few weeks. That doesn't make him worth what we are paying him of course, but we can't go back and not do the renegotiation on his contract from 2 years ago. So he only has to be worth keeping for one more year rather than cutting. The contract #'s are set up so we keep him one more year. That's a tough one for me right now.

I got those numbers from snoops post. Most likely I just read into it. Not sure how Free has dead money since he's a FA in 15 unless we pick up his option. Was waiting for your take on this since I remember you were all over and against the deal in 2013.

I agree Meltons option won't be picked up.

Last time he was coming off two of the worst years of any starting tackle I can remember. This time he is coming off two pretty decent seasons. There was a time last year where he was playing at an extremely high level before falling back at the end and he was OK this year also. last time I felt he was done and shouldn't even be on an NFL field and he proved me wrong. But, you still are getting hurt by the original contract if you keep him; but not as bad.

I'd look into what it takes to keep him, but if we did i would want him and Parnell to fight it out and would prefer Parnell to win the job since his future is brighter. I also have no problem letting him go and using those cap $'s elsewhere. This would absolutely require getting a swing Tackle in case of injury and ideally to push Parnell for the starting job. I am happy with how Parnell has done, but not happy enough to hand him the job since every time he takes a step forward he seems to follow it up with an injury or period of disappointing play. In a cap world you need to replace guys with cheaper internal draft picks. But, resigning Free and Leary would guarantee a strong line next year and I worry about Romos health and want to protect him as much as possible. it also allows us to go elsewhere with our draft picks and FAs. Id be happy to sign him to another two year reasonable contract that keeps him here one more year and allows us to cut him without much issue after next year.

Melton is the number 1 no brainer for me. After that, I have no problem cutting Harris, love Beasley and think he has a bright future. I kinda like Free but hate his contract. Hate to say it because I'd love to keep Free for the right money for depth purposes, but it makes sense to let him go IMO. I think some of you guys are way too hard on the DB's. I like Carr and want to keep him. I do let Claiborne go in a heart beat. My eye test and his lack of production tells me he is a bust. Outside of Claiborne, I rather like our guys we have now with some decent depth of course. I also let Spencer go which is nothing for me as I have been saying this for 3 years now. And if I was in control of the team, I would use Sean Lee and his contract as trade bait or to move up in the draft to get the best available DT or extra picks. As much as I love Sean Lee with you guys, you are all assuming he is going to play more than 6 games. When have we ever got a full season out of him. Hate to say it but he is not dependable or reliable. He might be this year's Hershall walker for us. I hate it when Cowboy fans fall in love with guys that hurt us and don't want to admit it. Until we start dominating the damn line off scrimmage on the defensive side of the ball, we will never get back to the super bowl no matter how powerful our offense is. I use the whole draft on nothing but linebackers and defensive lineman and don't look back.

the thing about Sean lee is I think he helps this team even from the sidelines. The only way his contract hurts us is if we get rid of him. Also you are assuming he is only gonna play 6 games or less. Seems there was a lot of the same talk about Murray before this last season. So even as trade bait or any way we get rid of him. That is the only time his contract is damaging to us is getting rid of him. yet you are ok with carr's contract? Image

How does Sean Lee sitting on the side lines help us. Wow. When was the last time he played a full season? Just saying. I think Carr gets a bad rap from some of the guys in here. Our sucky lack of production from the line backer position for years now has been horrendous. Our D-line has been even worse. When we give the opposing Qb all the time in the world in the passing game, the secondary can cover for only so long. We need find and hit in the draft a Bob Lilly or Randy White that can control the run game and require constant double teaming. Add another pass rusher and another LB or 2 and I think we look good going into next year.

I'd rather pay Carr's contract than Lee's. I'm standing firm on my position. Until Lee can prove to me he can stay on the field for 16 games a year, his situation kills us. Sorry. Just what we need now that we are making progress, another Ware to hold us back, except Lee can't stay on the field more than 6 to 8 games a year.

your thoughts on Lee are fair. but I would rather have Lee's play on the field for 6 to 8 games (with the chance of him not getting hurt) for half of Carr's money, than to have Carr for 16 games for twice Lee's money. There is nothing damaging to the cowboys about Lee's contract. Carr's contract on the other hand......

Lee and injury are synonymous, but he is the best defensive player we have when he does play. There is no way I would let him go and I feel pretty confident the team agrees. To use him to move up to select a guy that may or may not be any good would be kind of foolish to me. It always drives me crazy when I see these trade scenarios and the whole scenario is basded on a rookie being a great pick. The fact is there isn't much more of a guarantee you get a good player in the teens than in the 20's, just a guy that draft gurus like better. Lee doesn't have to play 16 games to earn his salary, but yes, he needs to prove he can play most of them.

Don't know why but for some reason I think Lee makes it through 2015 without missing a game. I also get this feeling Clairborne will show us why we traded up for him.

Well Lees injury last year seemed more of a fluke then someone who has a poorly constructed body. When lineman fall on you there's nothing you can do. But it would be monumental if Claiborne goes from a bust to someone who is worthy of a top 4 pick. That would be an incredible and dramatic rebound. You never know though but it seems extremely doubtful this far into his career but would be a godsend with Odell now in the division.

So you're not really getting a feeling Claiborne comes back a superstar in 2015, you're just hoping. I'm feeling the same way about Marcus Smith. CB/S seems to be by far the hardest position to draft. Claiborne looked like he was gonna be a stud. I remember people talking about how he was rated higher then Patrick Peterson. It just seems like a crap shoot. The only team that seems to do a nice job getting DB's is Seattle and they get stars in the mid rounds. Earl THomas was a high pick but I think Maxwell, Chancellor and Sherman were taken in the 5th and 6th rounds.

It seems some here fail to see Lees OVERALL importance to this team. When he is on the field he is one of the best MLB in the league, his play making ability, his on the field leadership and his overall knowledge of the game are 2nd to none in the NFL at his position.

When he is not on the field he is still the leader of the defense, he is a teacher and a coach on the sidelines. After getting to watch him during his season on the sideline at PSU there is nothing that could be said against the guy that would sway my opinion of him. 95% of NFL players are invisible when they are injured NOT SEAN LEE, he is always there helping those on the field as well as the young guys trying to make it onto the field. His drive and love of this game are incredible.

If you really think this player is bad for this team or is not worth his current contract you DO NOT actually follow this team. Other team's fans see what we have in this player when some of our own fans fail to see it.

Really. I've seen every game since 1969. I don't need your punk ass crap that I don't follow this team. I love everything about Lee that all of you guys love in him. Some guys are just injury prone and I want more than 6 game a year from him. Don't tell me having Lee on the field for only 6 to 8 games a year helps us. When you take the hard core business side of this and look at his over contribution the past 3 years, its not worth it. If you can guarantee Lee plays a full year and through the playoffs, then I agree with all of you in here that's it worth it.

Lee played 14 games in 2010, 15 in 2011, 6 in 2012, 11 in 2013. 2012 he had a freak toe injury and went on the IR week 8 and could have came back before the playoffs if it wasn't for NFL IR rules. 2013 was a neck injury and this year he had a player fall on his leg at practice. They were all unavoidable injuries on his part. The difference Lee makes in a game in the NFL where ONE GAME can cost you the playoffs is worth the money.

You would have cut Murray before his record setting season.

While I find it hard to believe anyone has a higher opinion of Lee than me at this point (I've said for a few years now he'd be All Pro if healthy and that he is every bit as good as Kuechly) he does need to find a way to stay on the field more. If he does our defense automatically becomes much better. Even if you re-read your own post it does kind of outline the enormous number of major injuries he has had. The point you make that I have been making is the one about Murray. I'll pull up threads from the 2013 where people wanted Murray cut and said he wasn't any good and we should draft another RB or sign Chris Johnson types. I don't see too many people questioning Murray now...

Haha! I completely agree with you about Lee. Love the player when he's healthy. Problem is he gets hurt every single year. Being a sideline leader is overrated. When a player continues to get hurt and is then on the sidelines being a rah-rah guy his teammates will eventually start to tune him out. I think if he gets hurt again this year, it will be his last year in Dallas. The Cowboys need guys that can stay on the field. I fully expect the Cowboys to draft another LB this year in the first 3 rounds. When/if they sign Dez I don't see how they will be able to keep both McClain and Carter. Carter was the more productive of the two and may be too expensive to resign.

I think/hope Free will be resigned at a reduced rate. He's better than Parnell in pass blocking and would give the Cowboys experienced depth at the tackle position.

As for Carr, I don't think they cut him if they are only going to save a half million dollars. With some upgrades to the pass rush (specifically at DT) the secondary will be fine.

You agree with me. Hey guys I found someone that doesn't know me yet.
