Upcomming Free Agency, are we players?
We are almost out of salary cap hell from lousy contracts the past 3 years. Salary cap is going up. Players like Jefferies, Megatron, Forte, Miller from Miami, possibly West and/or Ware from K.C. when Charles returns will be some of the players available. Do we consider any of them for a couple pieces we need to fullfill the offense, and then continue to draft for the defense and find a replacement for Romo, or do we take a different direction?

Re: Upcomming Free Agency, are we players?
From my understanding the Cowboys could have as much as $30 mil to spend in FA. I would definitely make a run at Miller. I would also kick the tires on Jefferies. Another guy you didn't mention that will be available is Mario Williams. If the Cowboys decide not to bring back Greg Hardy he'd be a guy I'd bring in.
As for the draft, I've already said I'd take Goff if he's available. If he's gone I'd be happy with MLB Myles Jack or DT A'Shawn Robinson. Then QB in the 2nd and best player available after that.

The one thing about Miller that pisses me off at times is his inconsistency and fumbles too much for my liking. Love your thinking on Myles Jack. I haven't quite made up my mind yet on the top three DT's. I'll post who I like the best shortly.

I would prefer Myles Jack but the temptation to draft Treadwell is going to be there too. The thought of having him on one side and Dez on the other is pretty enticing.

Not tempting to me. I'd NEVER, and mean never, use a 1rst round pick on a WR or CB. Especially with our history after the Clint Murchinson era.

I am starting to come around to your way of thinking on Lamar Miller though. He may be a REAL nice gem and good fit here, for the right price.

I think Miller will end up getting about the same kind of deal that Murray got last off season. Signing Miller would prevent the need for drafting a RB and a RB core of Miller, McFadden, and Dunbar is pretty good.

Re: Upcomming Free Agency, are we players?
Yes, but then again your talking a bit of grooming here. Romo and Whitten only have 2 years TOPS. This is it for them. And come on, you know Jerry's history, always looking to win now, especially in this case. Your case for bringing Miller and for the right price, adding Jefferies on the other side is something of merit. Think about it, Dez will come back very healthy, and VERY hungry next season. With Jefferies on the other side, it will be hard to double team Dez and stack the box, opening things way up and preventing Romo fromtaking less hits. Next years defenses will have to play WAY more HONEST. So again, even with this line of thinking, which I would agree to, doesn't it still make my way of thinking of attacking the upcomming draft and going all out on defense.Mr B wrote:I would prefer Myles Jack but the temptation to draft Treadwell is going to be there too. Trust me I do understand your thinking. The only thing that keeps me from being all in on drafting for defense is remembering what this team went through after Aikman retired. Jerry had zero plan in place when Aikman called it quits. He had plenty of time to prepare for it (with Aikman's ailing health) but kept going for 1 last shot. If they fail to make a plan for the future they will be doomed to suffer the same results. That's the last thing I want for this team. The guys that will still be on this team after Romo retires like Tyron Smith, Zachary Martin, Travis Frederick, Dez, and Byron Jones don't deserve that.

The Dion Sander's contract was the beginning of the end. That contract kept us from wrapping up many players like Larry Allen, etc., Once Jerry got Jimmy out of the way, he slowly destroy everything built. We should have won more than 3 super bowls.

Deion's contract did not prevent them from resigning Larry Allen. Allen was a rookie the year they signed Deion. It did prevent them from resigning Alvin Harper, Ken Norton, and Jimmy Jones though. Other than Norton it proved smart to let those guys go. You can actually include Mark Stepnoski and Tony Casillas too although those two guys ended up coming back and were not the same.
As for Jimmy, Jerry no doubt played a huge role in him leaving but Jimmy himself has said that he was gone regardless. He wanted a new challenge. Also if it were up to Stephen Jones the Cowboys would have never signed Deion Sanders. My point is that this team is in good hands with Stephen. He's not his father. That's evident by him keeping a real football guy around in Will McClay. You can look at the last couple of years and see the proof that Jerry is not in total control anymore. He's still the face of the team and handles all of the marketing but make no mistake, Stephen, and McClay are running the football side of things.

Yet your o.k. letting Jason Witten become our only hall of famer without a ring. Tell him he needs to be patient for another couple years so we can groom QB's and WR's when that's all he may have left. Frankly I wish Witten would have retired last year.

I agree it does suck Witten hasn't got a ring. I believe they can still make another run and draft a QB high in this draft though. As I've said many times before they should draft a QB to groom and reload the defense with the rest of the picks. Then sign Lamar Miller and Alshon Jefferies for the offense. Also Mario Williams for the defense.

Can't agree with you on Mario Williams. Totally over rated IMHO. And I still want the high draft choices on defense. Can't say it enough, QB is just not on my radar this year. We've been doing the WR, QB and CB crap for decades now and it has never worked out.

They have not been doing the QB thing for decades. If they had been they wouldn't be in this position now (with the #4 pick). They've never been in the position to draft a top 5 QB since Aikman retired.

Could have been if Jerry didn't give up 2 first round draft choices for Roy Williams.

That trade right there I think was one of the main reasons Stephen convinced Jerry to give up total control of the player personnel.

That was another trade right there that set us back for a few more years. Along with the Joey Galloway deal, that put us in a world of hurt instead of adding nice pieces. I actually get sick talking about this stuff.

I agree with you 100%. Both those trades killed this franchise for several years.

Re: Upcomming Free Agency, are we players?
Did some research to bring me more up to par in regards to unrestricted free agents. Picked out a few players according to our needs. What do you guys think? RB - Ronnie Hillman, Matt Forte, Lamar Miller. WR's - Jefferies, Marvin Jones, M. Sanu. TE's - Antonio Gates and Ladarius Green (who I really like). CB's - Norman, Tillman, Finneghan and E. Berry. LB - Von Miller.
