Cowboys Free Agents - 2017 off season

Post#1 » by Otis Driftwood » Wed Jan 18, 2017 4:00 pm

Here are the Cowboys UFA's... with positions, age and 2016 salaries;
Brandon Carr CB 30 $10,020,000
Rolando McClain ILB 27 $4,000,000
Morris Claiborne CB 26 $3,000,000
Ron Leary G 27 $2,553,000
Barry Church SS 28 $2,206,750
Mark Sanchez QB 30 $2,000,000
Andrew Gachkar OLB 28 $1,750,000
Darren McFadden RB 29 $1,500,000
Lance Dunbar RB 26 $1,250,000
Jack Crawford DE 28 $1,100,000
Gavin Escobar TE 25 $1,052,623
Terrell McClain DT 28 $1,016,667
Justin Durant ILB 31 $965,000
Joshua Thomas CB 27 $760,000
Terrance Williams WR 27 $724,243
Kellen Moore QB 27 $710,000
J.J. Wilcox FS 27 $702,767
Brice Butler WR 26 $556,875

Church is the one Cowboy I look at and think they will make every effort to keep. He's a leader and called the secondary plays on defense. Marinelli trusts the guy.

They may also take a flyer on talking Carr out of retiring. Had his best year and is one of the quality guys you want in the locker room.

I'm mixed on Claiborne. Dude was OK this season when he was healthy. That's his problem. He's rarely healthy.

As noted above - Leary is gone. He's going to get paid and deservedly so.

I was going to ask yo about Claiborne. I'm very mixed about him. Even though he played much better this year, health seems to be a constant issue with him. The only players you have on the list I'm interested in keeping are: Carr, Church, Crawford, Terrell McClain, Durant, Terrance Williams and J.J. Wilcox. Everyone else can go, especially the other McClain (done with him) and Mark Sanchez.

Man that's a really pitiful list of FA's. haha

Of those guys I think they make an offer to Wilcox and Terrell McClain. I could also see them making an offer to TWill in the 3/$12 mil range. Other than that I don't really see them trying to keep anyone else. Church has been a leader but he's also getting older. He'll be 29 by the time camp starts and based on the last couple years they prefer to go younger. Jones, Frazier, Heath, and a resigned Wilcox gives them 4 safeties. Plus I think they draft another one.

I think Carr is ready to call it a career and even though Claiborne was better this year he can't stay on the field. I think they draft a CB with in of their first two picks.

I'm not spending a penny more on Claiborne beyond the minimum. You're right Mr B - dude can't stay on the field. I'm torn between Wilcox and Church. Yes Church is older... but he's better.

They'll keep Sanchez and try to keep Moore. Everything we read locally would lend credence to how comfortable Dak is with both of them.

As much of a punchline Sanchez has become through this career he really has been great for Dak's development. He's just horrible on the field. I've said before and I'll say again, if Romo is traded to Denver they should ask for Simien (in addition to a draft pick) in return.

Also Greg Jackson was a great addition to the coaching staff this year. Whatever he's doing with Wilcox has helped. The light really seemed to come on for him this year. He was light years better than he was last year. That's the main reason I say we should resign him over Church.

Will be interesting to see what the market is for both of them. There will be one.

O.k., Leary is gone (2.553 mill), Rolando McClain, please, we've had enough from him (4.0 mill), Sorry guys, but Mark Sanchez has to go (2.0 mill), McFadden, out of here (1.5 mill), Escobar, had enough of his act (1.052), Still up in the air with a few more, but so far that's only about 10.6 mill trimmed off our current salary cap. Can we also just give Gregory the boot as well. You can't fix stupid but I am not sure about his current contract and savings from that.

Remember BJJ - we are over the cap WITHOUT the players above. Stephen still has work to do there.

The names I mentioned above are the ones I would not hesitate to get rid of immediately as of today. Still thinking on the others. i suppose Dunbar could go, I'd like to keep Morris. I'm not opposed to trading or getting rid of Claiborne. We finally might have to bite the bullet with Brandon Carr.

I think Carr is a FA. He's considering retirement too.

I also think we can save a lot of cap space if we redo Fredrick's, Martin and Smith's contract as well.

NFL Update (@MySportsUpdate)
2/9/17, 4:24 PM
Rams, Eagles, Bears, Cowboys and 49ers are expected to have interest in Free Agent WR Pierre Garçon. (via Washington Post)

This would be interesting. He's still a very solid WR and would be an upgrade over TWill.

That would be one hell of a steal if we were able to grab him. He's an absolute upgrade over Williams.

The only problem would be still no deep threat.
