What are you talking about? He said he would help out Tony Romo all he can to make the team successful, but that wasn't his primary job. And while I would have perferred a Joey Harrington or something of the like, Brad Johnson isn't terrible. Much better than a Matt Baker. He provides some leadership and experience. And if Tony Romo goes down for an extended period of time, we are probably screwed anyway.

He said he wasn't here to just be a mentor. I'm pretty sure Jerry let him know that Romo is the starter and Johnson has no chance to start over him. Still think Jerry will draft a QB at some point on day 2.

If we draft a QB a guy like John Beck or Kevin Kolb might be a good pick.

Brad Johnson was probably the best veteran backup quarterback out there. I'm pretty happy with the signing.

what the hell are you talking about?

All he said was that he wasn't going to come in here and lie down by ceding the starting job to Tony. He is absolutely the perfect compliment to what we are doing for next year. He is still good enough to eke by on a playoff caliber team as a starter if Romo goes belly-up, while he is a good role model and mentor for a young QB. Remember, Tony credits Vinny T. as being the guy that really showed him what it takes to be a starting caliber QB in the league, as far as preparation, hard work, and professionalism goes. If Brad can add to that, and help Romo take the next step to being consistent and effective as "the guy" for our team, it would be a home-run signing indeed.

Didnt you see any minnesota games last year? The guy is complete crap. I just dont get why Jerrys making this a habit. Overpaying these damn old guys that are washed up.

Testaverde, Bledsoe, Johnson.

He really rubbed me the wrong way in this article

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/F/ ... ION=SPORTS

IRVING, Texas (AP) -- Brad Johnson made it clear Tuesday that he didn't sign with the Cowboys in order to be Tony Romo's mentor.

"I've never agreed with that terminology, that term: mentor," Johnson said in a conference call. "
My role is to be ready to play at any moment, and my role will be defined in time."

Johnson became an unrestricted free agent last week after he was released by Minnesota. The Cowboys needed another quarterback after releasing Drew Bledsoe, who lost the starting job to Romo in the Cowboys' seventh game last season.

Johnson's deal is reportedly for three years and $7.5 million.

Johnson, 38, said his decision came down to the Cowboys and Broncos. He chose the Cowboys because of his friendship with offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and his displeasure with the role the Broncos had in mind for him - as mentor to quarterback Jay Cutler.

"They drafted Jay in the first round and he is the franchise. They want him there for the next 10 years," Johnson said. "He is loaded with potential and talent and they are looking for more of a mentor kind of role. That mentor thing, I really kind of disagreed with that."

Johnson, who was a teammate of Garrett's in Tampa Bay for part of one season, said he hopes Romo and the Cowboys have a successful season but added that he is "not there for my health." Johnson plans to have a role in that success, and not one that involves holding a clipboard.

Romo, he said, "already has a quarterback coach. He doesn't need another coach. My thing is to work hard in practice and have a great relationship with Tony and hopefully he has the best year of his life."

In a statement, the Cowboys said Johnson "will provide depth and experience" in his 16th NFL season.

Johnson went 6-8 as a starter last season, losing his role to backup Tarvaris Jackson for the last two games. He completed 62 percent of his passes, with nine touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

Johnson started the 2005 season as a backup, replacing the injured Daunte Culpepper after seven games. Johnson went 7-2 that season with 12 touchdowns and four interceptions.

Johnson, who won a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay after the 2002 season, has thrown for 28,548 yards with 164 touchdowns and 117 interceptions in his career.

I just hope Romo can keep his mind on the game instead of Carrie Underwood.

And this is from a different article with much of the same info as that one

When the Vikings decided to cut Johnson, he was told he could remain as a mentor to the younger quarterbacks on the team.

Johnson told team officials he believed he could start in the NFL.

I love Romo. Seriously I hope he kicks cranky Brad Johnson's ass.

BTW a little tid bit for 'Boys fans.

Bend, Or is my hometown. Bledsoe lives there now; nicest gym is the Athletic Club. Drew and his brother were playing racquetball against two other guys and a dispute broke out that spilled into a main area. Employees came and were escorting both parties separate ways when one of Bledsoe's conspirers yelled out "ROOOMOOOO!" and an enraged Drew tried to break through the like ten deep group of employees to no avail.. and instead pissed a massive hissyfit and now has his membership fully comp'd and the dudes who sacked his racquetball confidence were banned.

Word of mouth from employee of company I've known since I was lil..

I didn't think that Drew would be quite that bitter, but losing your high-paying and high-profile job to an undrafted rookie free agent would be hard on anybody, I suppose.

Awesome. Personally i probably would have used the trio (Brady, Losman, Romo). I wonder how pissed off that would have made him.

Well, I don't care if Romo has a 50 QB rating half way through the season, if Brad Johnson starts at QB, barring injuries.. I will be PISSSED.

Who the hell wants a "mentor" for Tony Romo anyway?

He has an offensive coordinator who is a former QB and a former QB coach. He has a QB coach who is a former QB.

How many mentors does this guy need?

I'd actually prefer it if Johnson isn't whispering in Romo's ear during every time out. Vinny gave Romo all the old QB mentoring that is necessary. It's gametime now and the coaches will do whatever coaching is necessary.

I want Johnson to be there ready to play if he's needed. That's it. If keeping the necessary mental edge means he's competitive and wants to start, fine, so be it. Doesn't bother me at all and if Tony Romo is shaken or threatened by Brad Johnson (not likely), then he's probably not what we're looking for anyway.

I was happy that we signed Brad Johnson. He is an experienced veteran, who we know can come in and play if needed. Better then having a rookie, or Matt Baker backing up our already inexperienced quarter back in Romo.

You have to have a decent backup QB in today's NFL, only a few starters will be able to start 16 games, and you can't afford to give away games. You can win games with Brad Johnson at QB. If you have the best defense in the league you can even win a Superbowl.
