The Cowboys may indeed have the next head coach of the franchise on the staff, but it’s doubtful they have the next secondary coach on the team, even if Terence Newman looks like he could do the job.
Sidelined for the past few weeks with a groin injury, the Cowboys’ Pro Bowl defensive back has turned himself into a poor man’s version of Dave Campo, and his star pupil is Mike Jenkins.
"He’s in my ear more than Campo," Jenkins said.
Although a lot of the rookie attention has been on running back Felix Jones (feet/hands) and Martellus Bennett (Hard Knocks), it’s Jenkins who could be in a position to contribute as much as any member of the Cowboys’ draft class.
Jenkins will not, however, start against the Texans on Friday night. The Cowboys are going to put him behind Adam Jones in the starting lineup. It will be Jones’ first start for the Cowboys.
"Pacman needs to play," Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said after Wednesday night’s practice at Texas Stadium. "Young guys need to play, too, and [Jenkins] will play a lot in this game."
