Official 2011 NFL Draft Discussion Thread

Draft is tonight. The Skins begin the draft with the following picks:

Round One - 10
Round Two - 41
Round Three - N/A
Round Four - N/A
Round Five - 144, 155
Round Six - 177
Round Seven - 213, 224, 253

Shanny has already said he'd be open to trading down. I'd love to get the Pats 17 and 28 (or 33) for the 10. I'd also hope the focus on linemen at first and get a QB propect later, perhaps trading back into the third or fourth round.

I look forward to reading your thoughts on what the Skins should/will do, and any other NFL draft predictions/reactions.

Go Skins!

I'll guess they pick Robert Quinn - the uber-athletic OLBer from Carolina. And if he's gone, they go Prince Amukamara - the very polished big physical CB.

I wouldn't complain about either one, but my preference would be to trade down about 6 spots to get Ryan Kerrigan and get a 3rd rounder in the deal.

This from the RealGM final mock:

10. St. Louis Rams (from WAS): Julio Jones, WR, Alabama.
St. Louis trades #14 overall, #78 overall, and a 2012 2nd round pick to Washington to move up and select Jones. They get Sam Bradford the #1 target he desperately needs to propel this offense forward.

<snip>

14. Washington Redskins (from STL): Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama.
Surprise! I don’t want to let the trade scenarios spiral out of control here, but given the situation here I would expect someone to be nervous enough about Miami taking Ingram that they trade up and get him here, with the Skins sliding back further and taking Christian Ponder.

Interesting. So he has us trading down twice and ending up with Christian Ponder, which I’m totally fine with. Problem is he doesn’t say who trades up for Ingram, and I really don’t see anyone at the end of the first round that needs a running back. I guess we’ll see what happens.

Yeah, I would do that, at least try and get a 3rd or 4th round pick out of it and see what happens.

will the temporary removal of the lockout allow player movement. The vikings could give us atleast a low 3rd of high 4th for McNabb

Chris Russell on 980 said that the Skins front office "does not expect" to be able to trade players tonight. But the league will come out with more direction on Friday, which would still allow for getting a potential 3rd or 4th round pick tomorrow.

More from Russell:

- Skins want to move down
- Skins want a defensive player
- Skins are "dialed in" on Christian Ponder

Pretty much similar to the mock quoted above. If the Skins can execute a trade down and end up with both Ponder and somebody on the defensive front seven before the night is through, I'd be pretty ecstatic.

That's freaky. They really did trade down 6 spots - and got a 2nd rounder (49th overall). Great trade!

Should be interesting to see what happens. Personally, I would pick a QB at #41 if Andy or Ryan is still there. If not, go nose tackle.

Then I would trade the 49th pick to pick up a late 2nd rounder as well as a mid-3rd round pick if possible (or a 4th rounder) and go from there. 2nd round picks are valuable. Would not be surprised if you can get a 1st round pick in 2012 for a 2011 2nd round pick.

Absolutely perfect first two nights IMO. Accumulating picks while also filling needs. Also, just noticed that all 3 picks so far by the Skins were seniors. Definitely looks like they put a premium on character and maturity. Me likey.

We have something like 10 picks to make tomorrow including 5 in the 5th round I believe, or is it 4? Me thinks this is where they will definitely start to build the bottom half of the team.

Really like leonard hankerson. He was billed as the next andre johnson coming out of high school.

and god knows we need playmakers on offense.

Plus he's tall. I'm tired of having our QBs over throwing our receivers thinking they're 6'6''.

Well, day 3 is over and I'm pretty satisfied. I feel like everyone picked in rounds 1-6 will be on the team this year. Obviously you can't address years of roster neglect with one draft, but this is a good start.

Also, I'll point out again that they picked no underclassmen. I dunno if less guys came out because of the labor situation, but I thought it was interesting.

I have been a critic of Shanny for the most part but man. i think he did a masterful job in this draft. I'm glad we passed on Gabbert, they guy threw 16 tds in a spread offense. Im not even sure how thats possible. And Mallet didnt fit our system. The only QB i really wanted was Dalton. One thing shanny has shown is his eye for talent and i think the selection's made this weekend will validate that once again. I think atleast half of the picks will make the team.

Rodgers is probably gone. the DB from Nebraska said in an interview that they will use him in nickel package. Where they used Roadger last yr. im thinking that they probably resign Buchanan. If they miss out on the Nnamdi A sweepstakes. I read in a scouting report that he's a "turnover machine".

Niles i like as well, he's big at 220 lbs even though he's only 6'1 but he still has 4.5 speed which is good. and is given credit for some of Helu's big runs at Nebraska because of his great down field blocking. Also read that his production suffered because of bad QB play

Im also intrigued by the LB from Fla St taken in the seventh rd. he's described as being able to cause serious problem for an offense off the edge but struggles at the point of attack. he could stick as another nickel package guy though.

I'm anxious to see what these guys are made of and even more anxious for the Lockout to end and FA to start b/c the skins obviously have some plans to target certain guys.

I think we still only get 7 wins next yr and have a shot at a top QB next yr

I know the Skins can't sign anybody right now, but here's a list of undrafted free agents that could be worth a look. Several intriguing center prospects IMO.

Looking closer at their 4th round pick, Roy Helu, I think they might have come up with a steal. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/play ... 8/roy-helu Dude played for a big time school - Nebraska - had big-time stats, and had bit-time combine numbers - 220 lber who ran a 4.42 40. And his running style fits the zone blocking scheme they use (he's a cut-back runner) and hides his weaknesses (hesitation at the LOS). Nebraska used several RB's, yet he stood out - getting 1,147 yards as a junior on 220 carries (5.2 yards a carry) and then 1,245 yards as a senior on just 188 carries (6.6 a carry!). Granted, he has a lot of weaknesses in the passing game, but if/WHEN Torrain gets injured, Helu could put up huge numbers on the ground.

I think getting a vet Center and rookie would be great for the Redskins. Hopefully one of the two can even play some Guard.
