Redskins sign CB David Macklin

Post#1 » by Rafael122 » Fri Apr 6, 2007 12:21 am

Don't fool yourselves, this is a solid signing and will most likely be our 4th cornerback.

Sometimes, the voice of Joe Gibbs can have a great impact.

David Macklin

Macklin

That had to be the case Thursday when Gibbs, head coach of the Washington Redskins, talked Cardinals cornerback David Macklin into accepting a one-year deal with the Redskins over three more lucrative deals with other teams. Macklin agreed to a one-year, $760,000 deal Thursday.

The Chiefs, Eagles and Saints had better financial offers on the table, but Macklin agreed to fit within the Redskins' cap restraints and accept a deal for the NFL minimum, along with a $40,000 signing bonus. The Chiefs were offering him two years of security.

Instead, Mackin, 28, decided to compete against three other veteran Redskins cornerbacks for playing time. Macklin had seven starts last season for the Cardinals and played 41 percent of the defensive plays.

Wikipedia is scary. They already have him as signed by the Skins.

He's from VA. Probably grew up a Skins fan and a Gibbs fan. Good.

Yeah thats what they said last night on NFL Network. He signed here for less money because hes a Redskins fan who always wanted to play for Gibbs.

Nice guy, I like this signing.

Macklin is decent, better than Mike Rumph who was our fourth corner last year. He has the ability to step in at nickle if needed, and I assume with our injury history at DB he will get that chance. Another good under the radar signing for Washington.

We still need to bring in some others to compete for that 4 spot.

I think this is what we should go with heading into camp. I don't see the need to sign another CB just to sign one. Jimoh is the 5th corner, and is pretty good on special teams.

They could draft one just in case.

I could see us drafting one in the later rounds or just signing a bunch of undrafted free agents as camp fodder... if one beats out Macklin (unlikely), then no harm done

the fact that he took less money to sign with the skins over teams like the eagles instantly makes him a fan favorite in my book

Remember Portis said that Eubanks looked real good in practice. Maybe he could give Macklin a run for that 4 spot.

Why are we going after Asante Samuel if we are already pretty deep at corner...unless we are gonna jettison springs, i don't see the need even though he's silly.

This article focuses on the Macklin signing but it also has this interesting tidbit:

Although they appear set at cornerback, the Redskins are expected to call New England about Asante Samuel, who expressed disappointment Wednesday about not getting a long-term contract and would be open to a trade. Samuel shared a tie for first in the NFL last year with 10 interceptions and was designated as the Patriots' franchise player.

Eh, just looks like fodder to get the rumor mill churning. We don't really need Samuel, especially if we go ahead and draft Landry.
