Official "Is this Gibbs last year?" Thread

MRS. GIBBS PUSHING HUBBY HARD TO PACK IT IN?

We continue to hear that the wife of Redskins coach Joe Gibbs is pushing him aggressively to make 2007 his final season in the National Football League.

...

We're also told that owner Daniel Snyder is poised to turn up the behind-the-scenes heat aimed at securing former Steelers coach Bill Cowher to succeed Gibbs, if/when it begins to become apparent that Gibbs will call it quits after the 2007 season.

Gibbs, who'll be 67 in November, suffers from diabetes. Two years ago, a stent was inserted to clear blockage in an artery near his heart. Also, a young grandson of Joe and Pat Gibbs was diagnosed with leukemia earlier this year.

We reported several weeks ago that Cowher has been privately discussing possible arrangements with several teams, and we've heard from two sources that Cowher has been in touch with the Redskins. The next day, the team issued a statement disputing our report.

Good info. I actually think that Cower would be perfect for this team. Portis/Betts is a better tandem that the one Cower won a Super Bowl with (Willie Parker and an aging Bettis) and Jason Campbell is essentially another Ben Rothlesberger. Not to mention that Randle El is already familiar with Cower and his trick plays. He would also have a good eye for young defensive talent in next year's draft. Of course we'd have to dump Saunders and Gregg "The Extra G is for Grumpy" Williams but that's not a bad thing IMO.

Speaking of the Double G - I bet he's upset. He was supposedly promised the head coaching gig post-Gibbs and now Snyder's going "haha - made you look". I guess the mismanagement and underachievement of the defense last year did him in. That's no surprise since ol' Danny Boy is a "what did you do for me 5-minutes ago" kind of guy. But I still think that Cower is a step up and would probably have the team in the playoffs his first year here.

Feel free to comments on the quoted article or to post any of your feelings about whether or not this will be Joe Gibbs last year coaching the Skins.

Well IF Gibbs will really hang it up after next season, Cowher is a great choice.

Williams failed miserably as a HC because of his ego and anger problems. I guess a lot depends on how our defense performs next season. If its mediocre or terrible again next season, Williams is gone. A bad defense = mediocre season which might result in a Gibbs retirement.

I don't want the team to lose Saunders though. I hope he stays with us for several more years. Hes an amazing mastermind and his offense is a scoring machine if players get enough experience and time in it.

If Cowher comes to coach here I'll be happy as a Skins fan but pissed off as a person. My second favorite team is the steelers and that would be pretty **** for him to quite/retire whatever he does just to switch ship to the Redskins. I don't know plus with Saunders and Williams here I don't think it would look good if Snyder where to bypass both of them unless we had a catastrophic year this year.

Yep I'm a Steeler fan who just happens to follow the Skins and if Bill did that I would be POed.

However Cowher is the best coach "available" so the Skins would be stupid to pass up the chance to snag him.

Actually, Jeff Fischer from Tennessee might be available next summer too.

Keep in mind, we might be able to bring him to Washington and still keep Gregg Williams. Both are really good friends and have worked together in the past.

I'd much rather have Fischer than Cowher.
