Wing Defenders - Pick Two

Post#1 » by Eric Bieniemy » Sun Jul 17, 2022 4:52 pm

After years of running small guards on the wing, the Lakers finally have multiple wing defenders that stand over 6'5 (Tuscano-Anderson, Johnson, and Brown Jr.).

All of these three won't get consistent minutes with Reaves and Tucker also commanding minutes.

Which two out of Anderson, Johnson, and Brown Jr. Would you pick to play 25 minutes of game while the other guy sits?

We all know that all three have logged minutes at PF, but strictly as wing players, which two are better?

I'm not sure but I hope all three guys are practicing a lot of 3-pointers. If someone who shoots as bad as Draymond Green practices them knowing that he'll need to take and make important 3-pointers to help his team, there is no reason why these guys shouldn't be doing the same.

I guess the picking of the two was made for you. I don’t like that we lost Stanley.

Indeed. They chose right. I never answered my own question, but I had Brown Jr. and Anderson ahead of Johnson on the depth chart. Johnson, obviously, is more physical, but as a potential 3&D wing, Brown Jr. and Anderson were going to beat Johnson out. Johnson would've been out of the rotation.

I can see and accept that argument. Based on physical defense, which is what I prioritize and I think coach does too, I wanted him to stick around. We need a Metta World Peace type. According to me, we have enough offense to win every game.

On that note, I have high hopes that Swider will be a true 3 and D. But you need physical defensive guys like PJ, Tucker, MWP, Rick Fox etc to win rings. I think he’s still a twig.

Physical players are practically nonexistent these days.

In this day and age being tough and scrappy will do just fine. Brown Jr. and Anderson can fill Johnson's role and then some.

Yeah, that’s where I’m not sure. Seeing will be believing. It’s hard to believe that they (Rich Paul and LBJ) have done their best for the team when signing Lonnie Walker for big money while guys like Porter Jr where still available.

Are Troy Brown and JTA junkyard dogs on defense? Do they get after it, get physical, shut people down?

They are junkyard dogs interms of effort, yes, but they aren't elite defenders, although Brown Jr. does have shutdown potential.

Both are over 6'6 legitimate wing defenders with nearly seven-foot wingspans, and the Lakers haven't had two guys in the rotation like that since Kobe and Ariza/Artest.

I like the sound of that. Let’s hope coach holds everyone(!) accountable on defense.
