Besides his made up supposed inner monologues of our players, he has a whole lot of sound things to say about the game and the players. I just wanted to bring him up to discussion because I find it a very interesting dynamic to listen to him giving the players realtime theory lessons

Stu reminds me of the crazy grandpa I never had.

He has always driven me absolutely nuts with his style of commentary, but I will probably be crushed when he's gone.

I actually like him now a lot more then before, when Chick was still alive. I guess he still reminds me of Chick, he's a familiar voice.

Kind of like Roger Ebert. Remember Siskel & Ebert? I thought Siskel was cool and enjoyable to listen to, while Ebert seemed like a total jerk and douchebag. However, once Siskel passed, I liked Ebert a lot more.

I like him. I like his little dialogues

-Number 24 says "I'm runnin outta space guys"
-And Ronny just says "It's alright number 24, I got ya" and puts it up with the 2 handed dunk

I love Stu. He's my favorite annoucer right now, and he's fairly unbiased. I actually like his style... when I watch other games on league pass, and other local annoucers, I usually cringe at how boring, and dull they are... or how excessivley biased they are.

Stu is old, and does repeat a lot of things, it can get annoying, but hey he's old. I rather hear him say the same thing over again from time to time then hear a robot voice.

The one thing I hate about him sometimes is he is a jinx. "Now the one thing the Lakers don't want it a three pointer by "x" over at the corner" ... oops, that exactly just happened. Or... "The Lakers need to be careful with this lead, the last thing they want is "x" to go on a 15-0 run and get back in this game" ... wait, that just happened again... oops. That sometimes drives me nuts, because once he says something bad, it usually happens.

Ha ha ^, that's funny. I think you might have got the cause and effect backwards, though. No jinx in my book. Stu has so much history in the game that it's easy for him to predict based on tendencies he's seen repeating themselves for the last 40 years... But I know what you mean, it's disturbingly often.

I know I might get flamed for not liking Stu, but there is something about him that doesn't sound right (post Chick era). Don't get me wrong, I like Stu as a person, but I hate his commentaries (personally)

"One pass...two pass...three pass...oh four pass.... excuse me Mr. Bynum, on the Lakers basketball network.."

Sometimes it's corny, cheesy and the words don't jive. I also think that Stu is an avid Laker homer..

after Bynum's block on a Clipper:
... I guess he hasn't heard of Andrew... he doesn't have cable. I mean, if you have to go in there, go in there with somethin'.. don't go there with that weak stuff.." (Stu talking about the Clipper that Andrew bynum just blocked.)

Personally, I prefer listening to Spero Dedes and Mychal Thompson than Stu Lantz.

For the people that don't like Stu, do yourself a favor and order the NBA League Pass for one season. I did that when I was going to school in Michigan and wanted to catch all the Laker games. I never realized just how mediocre/horrible most other announcers are.

For instance, Clippers games. I can't stand listening to Ralph Lawler and his wooden teeth saying "BINGO!!" all the time. That's the lamest **** I have ever heard. Is this a retirement home Saturday night, or is this an NBA basketball game?

Hell, listen to one Boston game with Tommy Heinsohn and then start thanking your lucky stars you don't have to listen to that **** 82 times a year.

While we are on the subject of annoucers... I still don't know which team scored when I'm listening to Spero. "OH WHAT A PLAY! SLAM DUNK AND ONE!!! WOW, ##%%@ ... pause..... WHAT A PLAY.... pause...by Shawn Marion.

Sounds like none of you guys ever heard of Keith Erickson huh ?
Well he was the man with Chick before Stu, he was so bland it was mind boggling he kept the job for 4 or 5 years. I like Stu, he was a good player not great but he averaged double figures in scoring for his career.

Erickson was a less then average player so that tells you he couldn't completely analyze the game in a manner that the average fan needs to understand it. From reading most of the post here it seems you guys are too young to completely understand how Stu comes across.

The man could easily be a coach in the league but he's too smart to get in that chaos.

While were on the subject of Chick's old side kicks did any of you guys know that Al Michaels was also with him in the early 70's, but Chick told him he was too good to be saddled next to him and persuaded him to be a lead broadcaster. He also had Pat Riley for a hot minute before JW pulled him from the booth in the 80's. Bottom line is Stu was better then all those guys, thats why the Lakers hired him away from his gig with CBS.

Stu is good and it's a reason the Lakers haven't replaced him on TV, no one can do it better.

Stu entertains me with his dialog for the players, like when Sasha makes shots he starts saying something like "Sasha is going for Kobe's spot" lol.

Also Stu gets me back into the game when Joel Meyers say something that is incorrect, and you all know what I'm talking about. I hope Joel Meyers goes back to the radio too, I think he's more suitable for that job.

He is an excellent announcer.
He understands the game inside out.
He doesn't get too high or low.
He is a class act with a great voice.
I think the players respect him a great deal.

I really do enjoy listening to Stu, however if there is the same game on ESPN,ABC,TNT I turn the channel and listen to those guys. Just to mix it up a little, could be fun

Stu Lantz is a breath of fresh air. He's a lasting link from the Chick Hearns legacy and I hope he stays on the air for many years to come. If you ever get a sniff of NBA league pass and here commentary around the league, you'll begin to get a sense of how spoiled we are.

The worst that I've heard thus far is the play by play guy for the Hawks....oh my God, that guy is boring...corny, with stereotypical white guy voice (picture Dave Chapelle doing a white guy imitation). The Celtics announcers come a close 2nd, the "Bingo" guy is just awful. I love Stu.

Stu isn't my absolute favorite. But having had the League Pass for three or four years know, trust me when I say that there's plenty worse out there. A LOT worse. In fact, compared to clowns like Tommy Heinsohn (an absolute embarrassment to the profession) and Sean Elliott (smug attitude, nasal voice), Stu is pretty damn excellent.

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the goofy tangents he goes on. But at the very least he's not a homer, and I definitely appreciate that compared to the majority of NBA color guys. I'd probably rate Stu and Meyers -- who has improved a ton since he was with the Spurs -- in the upper quarter of local announcing crews.

I just wish I could have heard Chick in his prime, instead of the one who pronounced "Medvedenko" 20 different ways in a single broadcast.

OMG That is EXACTLY why I love Spero.. he is so explosive when making calls and makes the game 500% more exciting than it actually is. I LOVE IT!!! For example:

".... rebound Bynum, bounce pass to Turiaf, spins.. who LOBS IT TO KOBE FOR A TOMAHAWK DUNK!!!#@$#%$^ ..."

However when I get home and watch the replay, the SAME PLAY doesn't look so exciting on TV, but Spero made it sound VERY VERY exciting. I love it..
