Laker player comparisons?

Post#1 » by ko8e » Sat May 10, 2008 7:07 pm

My take on this team, and who each player compares to back in the 80's and 90's, goes like this;

The Starters:
Derek Fisher plays like the Pacer version of Byron Scott. This, to me, is a perfect comparison of the two.
Kobe Bryant plays most like MJ. This one is the most obvious, IMHO.(Please don't get mad I'm just going to the closest old-time comparison.)
Lamar Odom plays most like Scottie Pippen. The problem with this comparison is Odom actually plays taller, and Scottie played all world defense, where Lamar doesn't.
Pau Gasol compares to Rik Smits. The Difference? Smits is taller, while Gasol passes way better.
Andrew Bynum was playing like a young David Robinson. I think this one is a very good comparison.

So our starting 5 looks like this

PG-Byron Scot
SG-Michael Jordan
SF-Scottie Pippen
PF-Rik Smits
C-David Robinson

Once we get David Robinson back we might not lose another game til....Well....til Michael retires.

The Bench
I will finish this one later.

Don't really see the resemblance between Odom and Pippen right now to be honest..

Bynum/Robinson is off too IMO. Robinson was more athletic than Andrew can even dream of being. DRob had flexibility like a small forward. Dwight is closer to Robinson athletically. Just look at this:

Bynum is never going to be that athletic.

Odom has a lot more in common with Anthony Mason and Derrick Coleman than Scottie Pippen.

Gasol reminds me of Toni Kukoc, if Kukoc were determined to play as a frontcourt player.

What about Gasol=Sabonis?

I mean that when they get the ball inside. Good passers. Gasol is much quicker than him but Arvydas is much better overall

Fish reminds me of Mookie Blaylock without Defense.
The Gasol-Smits comparison was dead on.
Lamar is the 2nd coming of Danny Manning.
Kobe and MJ is a no brainer.
A healthy Bynum reminds me of a Bigger not as skilled Tim Duncan.

Bynum is no where near as athletic as The Admiral but he's much more athletic than Duncan. I cant think of a good comparison with him.

Radman is no where near Kukoc because Toni had a very good handle and he wasnt a space cadet. You could rely on Kukoc. He's more of a 6ft 9inch Paxon. Just not as consistent of a shooter.

Gasol & Smits was dead on. Gasol is quicker & more agile, though.

Odom never was and never will be like Pip. He's similar to Coleman. However, he's much more athletic than Mason and Coleman.

How so? I don't see much resemblance myself. Worthy operated a lot in the post with spin moves. LeBron does not. LeBron is a playmaker off the top of the key, Worthy was not. They are kind of opposites to me.
