We will lose Odom after next season if he is not traded. He will be making $15 million next year and in line for a new contract. He will want $17 million a year like Rashard Lewis, probably 7 years, $129 million. Given the publicity he is getting flourishing in the Lakers system, he will get it from some team, if not the Lakers.
Problem with that is Lakers are already over the cap, and Bynum will be in line for a new contract as well. Add that to Kobe's $24 million/year, Gasol's $17 million/year, Vlad's $6 million, Fisher's $5 million, Luke's $5 million, Bynum's soon-to-be $12 million, and the Lakers are already $12 million OVER the salary cap, even WITHOUT Odom, Farmar, Sasha, Ronny, and Ariza. Add those other role players in, even at minimum salaries, and there's no way the Lakers can afford Odom.
Bottom line is Odom is gone after next year. Forget the trade for Melo. Lakers can't afford a third superstar. Kobe and Gasol eat up too much salary, just like Kobe and Shaq. Unless you wanna fish for a Karl Malone/Gary Payton over-the-hill aging veteran who will play for NBA minimum, next year will be the last for this nucleus.

Good post but L.O will never see a 7/129m in his life .
I dont care who will pursue him , thats a lot of money for Lamars current value .
And you bring up R.L .......... Is he worth 17 mil ..... hell no .
I think Buss is a lot smarter than that .
There's a lot of players out there that better than L.O that can be signed for less money .
Bank on it , and as far as Malone/Payton type players , the way the Lakers have been playing recently and with the return of Bynum next year , you would surprised how many players will take less money to join a team thats a contender.

No team in the league except the Lakers can offer Lamar longer deal than 5 years, and we can offer a maximum of 6 years.
7 year deals are not longer allowed after the 2005 CBA came into play, and even if they were no one would be able to offer that to Lamar unless it was a sign and trade in which we would probably keep Lamar instead of trading him since we'd get his salary back anyway.

Sorry, I meant 6 years, $118 million. That is the contract that Rashard Lewis signed.
Odom is a better rebounder, better defender, more athletic, a better slasher, a better driver, a better dunker, younger, and more versatile than Rashard Lewis.
I'm just saying, Odom wins two rings with us this year and next year, and suddenly championships dont matter anymore when the summer comes. It'll be all about the money, making as much as he can before he retires and gives up basketball for the rest of his life, He'll jump ship quick when another team comes knockin on the door with a large deal.
Buss is by no means a cheapskate but theres no way in hell he's spending $60 million on 3 players (plus $10-12 million for Bynum) when the salary cap is only $52 million.

Yes it is. The Orlando Magic traded for Rashard Lewis using a big trade x and a 2nd round pick, so you're wrong about this. The Sonics were the ones who signed Lewis to that deal. It was a sign and trade, and that's exactly the same scenario that it would take for LO to get that deal from a different team than the Lakers. 5 years is the max any other team than the Lakers can offer unless it's a sign and trade. I'll bet you any amount you want.
So, why would the Lakers deal Odom, and still pay the tax instead of just keeping LO?

-Bynum for Melo works out less so financially, but can bolster the talent around Kobe for years to come.
-Odom for Melo works out fine financially, but I don't like it as much.
The Nuggets haven't indicated they would deal Melo for Odom/Bynum.
I'd rather not get into that discussion until they do, or until our season is over.
