Phil..Apple has totally cut us resellers out of the loop on the iPhone so i cant get them at reseller/dealer cost's but at 199.99 you really cant go wrong paying retail, it's comprable if not less than other pda/smartphones. I paid more than that for a treo less than a year ago.
And yes the HTC is a hot phone as well but i think the iPhone edges it out as far as realistically usable features go.

download the update to your phone that enable multiple texting. its been out for... 3 months (? had to think abt it) now i think. it was a pain for me too but thank goodness they addressed it.
the real kicker here is the price people. they cut off $200 the base price but AT&T is increasing the price of the data plans for the new iphones. another $30 ($45 for business users) on top of the $39.99 base voice plan. steep =/

that reminds me of the U2 deal with ipods. the band declined to charge customers for the music in the U2ipods in exchange for tv advertising for their new CD and upcomming tour. U2 saved face by not selling out and got free advertizing and only gave away their music to a few people that bought that specific ipod.
I wouldn't be surprised if Apple is getting a piece of the AT&T profits from the increased service price. AT&T will get more exclusive customers while apple gets a kick back. it all works out for them because in the long run the customer is the one that pays more either up front or in monthly payments.

How the half-price iPhone 3G actually costs you more
Buzz up!on Yahoo!
Not mentioned in today's you-can't-get-away-from-it iPhone 3G announcement: AT&T's service plan jumps $10 a month. What's this? Did Apple finally figure out what the rest of the retail world did: That when you give away the razor you can charge through the nose for the blades?
Let's look at the math. Old iPhone: $399 (for 8GB of storage), plus $60 per month for 450 voice minutes and unlimited data. Two-year total (since you'll be signing a two-year deal for either handset): $1,839.
New iPhone: $199 (for 8GB of storage), plus $70 per month for a basic voice plan (presumably the same 450 minutes) and unlimited data. Two-year total: $1,879. That's $40 more over the course of your contract, which is really not that bad in the grand scheme of things. Had AT&T and Apple raised monthly fees just another $5 per month, the total cost of service would have hit $1,999 over two years (not including taxes and fees).
"Business users" get the shaft, big-time, with a minimum of $85 a month for service. That's $15 a month extra just so you can get email via Exchange. Boo. Other annoyances: iPhone 3G will have to be activated in stores instead of at home, like before, and the phone won't be available to purchase online at launch.

That is so shady.
I kinda like the old iphone now, based on what you guys have been saying. So it's slightly thicker, who cares, so is Jessica Alba. It has better battery life and a metal rather than plastic backing. That's a major plus. If all the other functions are the same, and the price is even, what's the big deal about the new phone?
On the other hand, is it possible to switch carriers? Then people could take advantage of the cheaper phone by switching to a cheaper service.

ok. updates to the old iphone allow cell-tower triangulation to function as a crude GPS. its good enough to get u from point a to b (provided u can wait for EDGE to load)
yes ur looking at a minimum of $70 a month. voice and data (includes GPS).
personally i dont think its worth it to jailbreak ur iphone because the software trend is looking to naturally make the phone 'open' anyways. just my 2 cents.

What does jailbreaking ur iphone mean? Are you saying it isn't worth unlocking the iphone or are you saying it isn't worth paying $70 a month for the iphone?
Are you also saying that the GPS is somewhat sh^tty on the iphone as well?

Please elaborate lol.
What about ppl with unlocked iphones out there? Was it a smart or dumb idea paying over $500 for one and you cannot legally update via itunes.
It's a luxury that I don't need or care about.
After factoring the cost of protection, the wasted time spent on it, etc.
It's not worth it.
But hey, if you got the money, go crazy...
Buy me one.
I'm sure the feds would love to get paid to do nothing, sit around somewhere cozy and listen in up to a 50 feet radius of the phone.
If I'm logged into that GPS and internet, I guess you can say i'll be totally screwed as how ppl can track where I am, what I type, and what I'm reading.
Isn't technology just wonderful?

jailbreaking ur iphone means unlocking ur iphone and activating it outside of the at&t service and is really not at all worth it compared to paying $70 a month. so if given the choice i would go for the $70 service and get what i paid for.

im saying the old iphone is already capable of limited-GPS.
bottom-line: if u dont need the faster 3g network and if they are slashing prices on the older models, then the old iphones may look really really appealing for the cheaper plan. hope it helps?
