what does BAE stand for, the LLE is the lower level exception right?

I think when people mention the LLE, they are referring to the BAE, or bi-annual exception. You can use it only once every two years, and right now it stands at a little over $2m.

Here are the salary cap exceptions: Midlevel, which is supposed to represent the average salary, I think somewhere around $5.5m this year, bi-annual, and minimum, which is from around half-a-million to a million, depending on years played in the NBA. The other exceptions are the variety of keep-your-own free agent exceptions, traded player exception, rookie exception, and disabled player exception.

You can't combine the midlevel and bi-annual, but you can split either of them. Hope that helps. Larry Coon has all the relevant info on his website.

Azubuike is a good player, but he really doesn't fill a need unless we look to move either Sasha or Farmar (possibly moving Sasha to pg). What we need is a small forward that can hang with all the elite 3's of the league, someone who can get physical during the playoffs without fouling every 5 seconds. I liked what I saw from Pietrus last year against Dallas, he didn't have a great offensive series but he cleaned up on the glass and stayed physical. That's all I wanted from Luke, Ariza, and Radmanovic and none of them provided that in the playoffs.

how serious are the lakers about retaining turiaf? what's his expected asking price? how high can the lakers afford to go to resign him with odom, gasol and vlad all expected to get minutes at pf next season?

i ask as a bobcats fan. we could really use a mobile pf and turiaf seems like a larry brown type of player. with adam morrison and now alexis ajinca on the roster i think turiaf would also make sense from a chemistry standpoint.

thanks.

Left-over FAs that are appealing

Post#45 » by Lakerholic44 » Wed Jul 9, 2008 5:30 pm

Maggette gone to GS
James Jones, probably gone to Miami
Pietrus gone to Orlando

So, that leaves LA with a few other options....

James Posey. It all depends on what offer is best for him at this point as he's looking to get paid as much as possible, being that this is his last contract. We all know about his toughness, clutch shooting, defense, and intangibles...which is why he's appealing.

Jarvis Hayes. IMO, could be a better version of James Posey once he settles down with a team and gets more minutes in a rotation as he has better handles and is a better outside shooter. His defense isn't as tenacious nor his rebounding, but he is more skilled overall.

Kelenna Azubuike. A tough, well-built two guard who can stroke it from the outside and can finish strong at the rim. He needs work defensively, especially after playing for Nellie a few seasons, but he has the athleticism and skills set to flourish on both ends of the court. IMO, would be an upgrade over Sasha and won't get pushed around by any 2 guard. Would compliment Kobe nicely as he wouldn't be asked to handle the ball two much, something he needs some work in, but can guard the 1 and the 2 positions while being able to overpower almost all the 1s when he's on offense. IMO, if LA offers him enough, they can pry him away from GS as they likely won't match.

Ricky Davis. Talented, can shoot lights out, but is cantankerous as heck. Still, would be an upgrade over Snasha in several ways, except his overall heart and commitment. Maybe Phillip can help straighten his dome as Phil loves to deal with these types of players.

Shaun Livingston. Worth a risk? I would do it at the right price, but then I would keep my fingers crossed that he gains some weight and works on his outside stroke....and stays healthy, of course, but that goes without saying.

Gordan Giricek. A decent euro replacement who can shoot, to replace Snasha...if Snasha were to leave.

Kareem Rush. A decent vet who can shoo to replace Snasha...if Snasha were to leave.

Maurice Evans. If Sasha leaves, he's worth a look. We all know about Maurice and what he brings to the table.

Quinton Ross. I'm not sold on him the way other people are, especially because he gets worked by bigger SFs, he can guard the 2 spot and smaller slighter built 3s, and although he can guard some 1s, he can't stay with the elite 1s in any way shape or form. So, being that he's almost one-dimensional on offense, I really can't see how he could LA much. Come to think of it, why is he even on this list?

Eduardo Najera. Sign him to the LLE or part of the MLE, and Turiaf won't be missed at all as he's a tougher baller, can stroke it from the downtown, and has better handles. Oh yeah, plays better on ball defense as well AND would be cheaper than Turiaf.

Kurt Thomas. Out-rebounded Turiaf and the Lakers single handedly when he got some minutes in the playoffs against LA. Long in the tooth, but he has a season or two left and would be great off the bench as well at teaching the youngsters a thing or two about how to cheat, err, how to use some vet tricks and get away with them. A solid mid-range shooter and very good rebounder and solid defender. Also an upgrade over Turiaf.

________

One traded I'm really intrigued with is this...

Lamar Odom and Luke Walton for Andres Nocioni and Kirk Hinrich. This would solve two things for LA, they would find a tougher and better shooting baller at the 2 spot and if Nocioni has problems guarding some 3s...then bring in Ariza. Hinrich would be and upgrade on both ends and would flourish next to Kobe and in the triangle. Hinrich won't get worked as much by other 1s and is a very good defender. Meanwhile, LA gets rid of Walton who is dead weight, IMO, and Chicago upgrades at the PF position.

Lakerholic what is this trade?

Lamar Odom and Luke Walton for Andres Nocioni and Kirk Hinrich. This is just you throwing some
trade on the table that will never happen, or did you hear or see this somewhere?

another thread mentioned ZO, whats the news on him....
outside for old vets that could help the lakers with toughness in the frontcourt, ie Kurt Thomas
i think ZO brings that all to the table plus attitude, he has a year or two left like thomas and la has world renowned medical facilities to take care of his ailing kidneys

Some other free agents, that won't require the full MLE:

PG:

Keyon Dooling, a good defensive point guard with length (also played 2-guard with the Magic). Has some offensive game, but 3-point shot is a bit inconsistent, and he's not a great playmaker/passer.

Carlos Arroyo, a quality passer/playmaker and can hit the midrange - aggressive player with moxie. Defensively is where he struggles a bit.

SF:

Matt Barnes, had a disappointing season, numbers down all across the board, but he had to endure some trying circumstances. His role and minutes were drastically cut, he had to accept a one-year deal last summer, and of course, his mother sadly passed away. Kind of a lost season for Barnes. But he has the capacity to be a very good defender, great size and length, excellent rebounder for his position. He can hit the 3-point shot as well, but that was one of many things that went south for Barnes last year. He can probably be had for a steal, and has the most potential to be a sleeper signing, imho (along with Azubuike).

Barnes, I thought about, but I think he would duplicate Ariza to an extent and steal his minutes so I didn't put him on my list. Ariza's shot improved and his release a lot better after the injury, so I'm hoping that his jumper will improve greatly by next season. Ariza is a better defender than Barnes and more athletic. If LA didn't have Ariza, I would push hard for Barnes.

Me too. I'd rather have him as opposed to Sasha, as I feel he's an upgrade and still a stalwart shooter who can actually finish strong at the rim and won't get pushed around by and guard.

A Chicago fan proposed it on True Hoops....ESPN. I'm not sure if Walton was in there, but I threw him regardless. It makes sense for Chicago in many ways as Odom will be an upgrade at PF. Meanwhile, trading Hinrich would allow Chicago to retain Gordon and by trading Nocioni it would allow Deng to get all the minutes he desires. If Odom doesn't fit, then his salary is off the table next off-season and Chicago has that much more money to go after a big name FA. For LA, we know why it would make sense.

Great signing by the Spurs, getting Roger Mason on the cheap.. I was really hoping we'd look into signing him if Sasha got MLE type money...

If I'm Mitch, I would let Turiaf walk and bring in Kurt Thomas. He is better than Turiaf in every facet of the game except for maybe cheerleading and team chemistry. However, he would bring a new dimension in thugness and toughness, he's an enforcer and a veteran. Got those crazy eyes man, lol.

Livingston would be an absolute gift to pick up for the LLE, but I don't see that as reality.

I'd end up playing it safe and grab Kwame with the LLE, he is definitely an upgrade over Mihm or Mbenga.

C/PF looks good..
Assuming the Lakers sign both Kurt Thomas and Kwame Brown...they would be good back ups for Gasol and Bynum. I'd be pretty content with those 4 guys at C and PF.

SF is a problematic logjam...
Ariza is too injury prone to rely on to start, Walton and Radman are decent bench guys...but neither are good enough to start on a championship team, imo.

I haven't even mentioned Odom yet...I really don't see him flourishing at the SF spot. Lets say he does well, still leaves Lakers with a huge logjam of 4 SF's on a team. And Odom is the only one with trade value of those 4 SF's; skill level and expiring contract makes him wanted by other teams.
If Odom doesn't work out, he's definitely getting traded.

I've heard Posey coming in for the MLE...and I would love to have him on the Lakers...but then the Lakers would have 5 SF's!!!!!! lol

Odom, Radman, Walton, Ariza...then Posey. wow!

SG is good
Kobe, I keep Sasha for up to MLE type money...only let him walk if a team offers more than MLE Type deal.

PG is decent
Fish and Farmar. Hopefully Fisher can still contribute despite getting up their in age, hopefully Farmar can continue to improve.

If I do end up making a trade, I'd be happy with the C, PF, and SG spots....and only looking to upgrade at either SF or PG.

I'm leaning more towards upgrading SF.
