OT: Is it really that hard to get into USC?

Post#1 » by marik1234xx » Fri Oct 24, 2008 5:26 pm

I've heard it was. I don't live in Cali or LA, I live in NYC.

I have some questions. Is it harder or easier for transfer students to get in or get accepted than incoming high school applicants? I remember hearing something about bigger colleges giving priority to community college transfers because they're already somewhat equipped to college life and have more experience than high school students/incoming high school freshmen. Another question, will it be harder for me to get accepted than a local/in state applicant because I'm from out of state? Or will there be the same chance basically for both of us? I know my tuition will be more though because I'm from out of state but that's not really my question. Thanks and I don't know about UCLA, I might give it a look too. Right now the only things I'm looking at possibly are NYU, Ohio State, Syracuse and USC. USC is probably my fav team in college football, that's why. And it doesn't hurt to be in LA near the Lakers and God Kobe. :D

easier for high school as you don't really need a high GPA as long as you have lots of activities. The SAT is also fairly easy so if you do really well on that it helps. As transfer you need a top notch GPA as well as solid extracurriculars, but not impossible. I think there are more entering freshman than transfers so that is also a reason why. I would give it a try. UCLA will be hard as they favor in state.

It's true, it's easier for in state students as well as students transferring from community colleges. I'm an alumni and came straight from high school. But the cost is so much that i don't think it's worth it.

My total loan for USC undergrad as well as masters in Comp Sci was $160K. My sister who is also an alumni is a dentist now and she owes about 260K. She's paying 1k a month back to the loans hehe.

So yeah, it's a good school to go to, but very expensive considering its' private.

The irony is, the school is top notch and very nice inside, but the surrounding area are very ghetto.. I stayed in a house down the street, there was a hole in the ceiling and occasionally mice would fall from there. lol

I just have to say it.. I went to USC because it was the closest to the LAKERS!! WOO HOO!! GO LAKERS!!

I inquired to UCLA about a masters about a month ago. If you're interested I can email you the exact requirements. alanj@providencecapitalfunding.com

3.5 won't cut. for USC.
Make sure your extra curricular are good
{not how many you have, but how committed [did so and so for all 4 years of H.S]
SAT and OR ACT + SAT subject is important

The acceptance rates are tough and competition is vicious esp. these past and upcoming years.

jirojan wasn't talking about high shcool GPA; he was talking about the community college to Uni. route. And yes 3.5 GPA + 60 transferable units are good enough. Heck, my friend got in UCLA with 3.0 GPA from my local community college. In terms of today's economical issues, that's the best route to take: Community college to Uni. because you save so much more money. Just don't get off track, lazy, or party too hard if you do.

Mr. Tony Montana how have you been buddy? I have not talked to you in a long time.
As far as the OP all I could say is it depends on your major, there are majors easier to get in than others. I got into the business school with about 3.8, but I know you can get in with a lower gpa in other majors. I was CC transfer; I also have heard students that did not get in with over 4.0 from HS.

It took more for me to get into Pepperdine's MBA program than USC's School of Marshall. I had a 3.71 GPA as an undergrad. I am told it is easier to get into the Masters Program than the Bachelors at USC - correct me if I am wrong. Like AceFresh said, have some extra curricular activities and get ready to pay a boat load of cash. If not be in debt for about $100K at the end of your education.
