Trimming The Salary Fat

Post#1 » by snaquille oatmeal » Sat Feb 21, 2009 2:15 am

http://www.ocregister.com/articles/season-lakers-powell-2312773-mihm-odom

the guy the Lakers want to play instead of Mihm is the guy who is ultimately Kupchak’s favorite Laker: Josh Powell. We can just assume the part about calling him “Kupchak’s favorite,” because bear in mind that a professional sports general manager’s job challenge is to be part brilliant Billy Beane, part basic bean counter. Powell fits on both counts. The Lakers plucked Powell out of the free-agent leftovers pile, dreaming that in a best-case scenario he’d be a conceivable fit in the triangle offense while adding a physical, hard-rebounding presence to the defense.

He lived up to all those possibilities early this season, even though there was no way to fit him into the game rotation. But Bynum’s injury opened the door fully, and the sweetest thing is that Powell makes less than a million bucks both this season and next season. That means Kupchak would love for no one more than Powell to play great this season and lock up a key rotation role for next season at the peanuts they’re paying him.

Powell would’ve played ahead of Mihm on Wednesday night anyway with Golden State’s lack of size, but it was still timely to see Powell post a season-high 16 points while impressing Jackson with an ability even to defend smaller guys such as Corey Maggette and Stephen Jackson. This was why the Lakers had no qualms about showing Mihm the door, whether that was morally right or wrong.

if Odom gets a great offer from some other team in the Summer and does decide to leave how do you feel about Powell taking over his minutes or would you go for somebody like Artest to replace Odom?

edit- wouldn't that be the irony of all ironies, Odom leaving the Lakers on his own and not because he got traded.

I wouldn;t mind going with Blake Griffin if he slipped to us. Or maybe we can trade 2 2nd rounders for him. Thoughts?

To you maybe, but to me he is doing what he is suppose to do.
He is driven, he has heart and he is coming through for us when needed to.
    Im okay with him.

He can be our 3rd back up but if he's our 2nd then we're in trouble. Luckily Bynum will be back so we don't have to worry about it.

All Im looking for in him is to cleanup the boards on both ends and play good D, if he is able to do that which it seems like he is I think we are in good shape.

Powell is doing good work. He is similar to Haslem imo in that he can hit that 15-18ft open shot when teams double Kobe. Decent on the boards and decent defender. Awesome player for what he's getting paid.....

4 guys get it here and one don't and the other is straight up lost. Some times I really wonder if some of these guys EVER picked up a basketball and played organized ball. To say Powell is third string is straight up incredible.

Powell has been awesome. I wish we had him last year in the finals. He's tough, nice mid-range and he goes after every rebound like its his. Gotta give Mitch major kudos for picking this guy up.

Aren't all the Turiaf homers glad we didn't match that offer?

ronny said he be much happier playing for a team that depended on him

mitch didn't match the Ws contract and let ronny go

powell doesn't have lamar's versatility and we would need to get someone else to help josh fill the void

every team the tru warier has been on has gone from playoff contention to an absolute trainwreck. causation is not correlation, but you have to wonder about the guy you're getting if 4 different teams had their postseason dreams dashed while he was on the roster.

Ya but your forgetting one thing.
History has proven itself when it came to certain players in this league that werent able to do well with other teams but they have been able to contribute very well under Phil Jacksons coaching and leadership, and to me I think Artest will be one of those players.
Specailly since he is getting old and he does want to win a ring and to top it off he has great respect for Kobe.
But it all comes down to money and who can we sign and add to our roster, and at this time I think our main focus on resigning players should be Ariza and L.O.
