Tex winter: Bynum could be 'one of the greats'

Post#1 » by dockingsched » Thu Mar 19, 2009 5:37 am

Andrew Bynum is still wearing street clothes for at least another few weeks, but if and when he ever gets healthy, he could be "one of the greats." That's the opinion of the Lakers resident guru of all things triangle, Tex Winter. "He doesn't feed (pass) as well yet," Winter said. "But if he keeps learning, and if he can stay healthy, he could be one of the greats."

The 87-year old Winter literally wrote the book on the triangle, or triple-post, offense in 1962 and has coached it with Lakers coach Phil Jackson throughout each of his two NBA dynasties.

So how do the Lakers current big men stack up to some of the Chicago Bulls big men during their glory years? Winter said he thought Horace Grant was probably the best player who has played the power forward spot in the triangle but current Laker Pau Gasol "is really good in that spot" as well. Right now Gasol is playing in the center spot because Bynum is out with a knee injury, and Winter loves the way he passes the ball and reads the defense, but thinks he's best suited to the four spot. Though Bynum could develop into a great player in the five spot, Winter said the player who has run it best was probably former Bull Bill Cartwright.

Texs' the man. I love the tri offense but i wish they mix it up and try other strategies as well. Bynum can be great but he has to work hard at it and be careful not to get injured too much... since both of his knees has had surgery of some sorts... he has to be careful.. but at the same time, not let it mentally hurt him..

And to think a Sixer fan came and post on the GT about the Lakers not running enough. I love the Triangle and some guys are just going to have to start running it to it's full extent........( cough cough Jordan) and doing the things the offense was meant for. Like controlling the tempo, and more than anything that's been the main reason for our struggles we don't control the tempo enough. People praise all this "running team" crap but take a hard look at those teams and their records.....................ain't really doing much huh ?

The Triangle dictates tempo period. Good post dcash4 !

with him we win the title. he is the KEY, and there is no doubt about that. we already have all of the other pieces, but with the size and slowdown of the game in the playoffs, we can battle on the inside if hes in. as the last philadelphia game has shown, our team gets outrebounded, outhustled and ZERO intimidation in the paint. iguodala was absolutely fearless in goin to the rack. we fix that problem with bynum.
