I'll go with Phil. 6 out of 9 Finals appearances anyone? Wow.

JB do you know how redundant this question is here ? Personally being a guy that saw both win, I like both for different reasons. I don't think you can argue about who was better because it was two different era's and two different teams and players.

Riley is still loved here if that's what you want to know.

Two very different eras, talent sets, motivational styles, and systems of play.
Both extremely effective with the talent they were given.
Both very much beloved here in LA.
Hard to chose between one or the other for me.

Riley was more of an in your face motivator which worked for those teams. I wonder if Bynum and Lamar would respond differently or better to Riley.
Phil is more of the calm, thinking type who let's things play out and letting players figure it out on their own.

Both very effective.

We've been blessed here in LA to have had two of the best coaches in the history of basketball.

i wont comment on which one, both brought CHAMPIONSHIPS and hung banners in LA. do that, and you get mad props in this town.

however, i will say this, if the internet was around during the 80s, riley wouldve gotten absolutely killed. he was HIGHLY criticized for not goin 3peat. he ran the guys to death, and they pulled hamstrings and we went out and played against detroit without magic and byron scott. they tore us up. not sayin a guarantee win. but it wouldve been a heckuvalot more competitive.

so the coaches are both great in their own right.

the fans? still the same.

Torn, but I like Phil's calmness about him. Seems always in control. As for Pat, enough said just by saying his name, the director of our Showtime era.

I like Pat more because he adapts to playing style. Not stick to just one playing style like Phil but he can play any type of ball.

Honestly, I'd rather have P.J. Pat Riley is very nit-picky. Although P.J had Jordan, Kobe, and Shaq it doesn't matter how much talent you put together -> Knicks. He knew how to control ego, and haha he put a 17 million dollar player on the bench.

why did riles leave the lakers in the first place, i dont remember...

also why does he comb his hair with buttered toast?

I don't think anybody beats Phil in his prime, but right about now Phil's waning attention and passion is fresh in my mind. Riley would have maximized Andrew & Lamar's potential for sure, but he did fatigue the vets in practice. Phil screws over young players, but takes care of his vets.

Pat Riley, I'm not a huge fan of Phil Jackson but he definitely gets the job done.

Personally I think Pat Riley was the greatest coach of all time in his prime. Just look at how different the rosters he coached to the Finals were. He could make it work with any set of players.

Phil's 2nd on my list with that incredible resume, but to be honest he's always had stacked rosters when he's made the Finals which makes me put Riles in front of him.

really< cause from where i am sitting riles rosters were even better...!!! magic the best that ever played, the captain , worthy , nixon, rambis , thompson, coop, green...all could hof'ers...

while phils teams have been stacked, there is always a very steep drop off after 1a and 1b....

Riles also took that Knicks team and Heat team to the Finals. Those 3 teams were build so differently, and he still made it work with all 3 of them. That's why he's the most talented coach of all time IMO.

That's a misconception. Phil plays the triangle because it can adapt to ANY style.

In terms of winning with different rosters, that is also another misconception. Jordan's Bulls are way different than Shaq's Lakers, and both of them are way different than Kobe-Pau Lakers. Those rosters are just as different as Showtime, Knicks, and Heat.

I'm not the biggest Riley fan

If the Heat didn't win, there would be no debate

From 1991 - 2005 Riley wasnt the man
Lakers are 22-3 in OT last 6 seasons:Kobe best OT closer!
