Gasol touching the rim not Goal Tending under the rules

Post#1 » by daddyfivestar » Tue Jun 9, 2009 9:27 pm

RULE NO. 11-BASKETBALL INTERFERENCE-GOALTENDING
(my comments in bold)
Section I-A Player Shall Not:
a. Touch the ball or the basket ring when the ball is using the basket ring as its lower base.
EXCEPTION: If a player near his own basket has his hand legally in contact with the ball, it is not a violation if his contact with the ball continues after the ball enters the cylinder, or if, in such action, he touches the basket.
The ball was not touching the basket ring (rim) as its lower base when Gasol touched the rim.
b. Touch the ball when it is above the basket ring and within the imaginary cylinder.
Gasol did not touch the ball.
c. For goaltending to occur, the ball, in the judgment of the official, must have a chance to score.
I will address this below.
d. During a field goal attempt, touch a ball after it has touched any part of the backboard above ring level, whether the ball is considered on its upward or downward flight.
Gasol did not touch the ball.
e. During a field goal attempt, touch a ball after it has touched the backboard below the ring level and while the ball is on its upward flight.
Gasol did not touch the ball.
f. Trap the ball against the face of the backboard. (To be a trapped ball, three elements must exist simultaneously. The hand, the ball and the backboard must all occur at the same time. A batted ball against the backboard is not a trapped ball.)
Gasol did not touch the ball.
g. Touch any live ball from within the playing area that is on its downward flight with an opportunity to touch the basket ring. This is considered to be a "field goal attempt" or trying for a goal.
Gasol did not touch the ball.
h. Touch the ball at any time with a hand which is through the basket ring.
Gasol did not touch the ball. This is Howard's goaltending not called.
i. Vibrate the rim or backboard so as to cause the ball to make an unnatural bounce.
Here's where some may say Gasol broke the rule... but did the ball make an unnatural bounce? Didn't look like it. The specific rule language is very interesting here with "unnatural".

Back to C: Since none of the factors that would make it "goaltending" occurred, this one is moot whether the official felt the ball had a chance to score or not.
.
Not interference by Gasol since none of rule 11 a-i occurred.

I'm a Magic fan (and quite a homer) and I think I can speak for a the large majority of magic fans: it was clearly not a goaltend. Only a few fans complained about it, but don't make the mistake to assume we're all whiners :P

Overall the series are being bad reffed for both teams. Bynum is getting phantom calls for breathing on Dwight and Pietrus gets the same for staring on Kobe. Both teams have reason to complain about the refs but overall it's been fair. No reason to complain so far on the zebras deciding the games.
Game one was a blowout, game two could have gone either way but your experience came up big on OT.

Let's hope we can keep talking about the games and not about how they are reffed.

zuppa, nobody said magic fans were whining. in fact many laker fans were saying it's a goal tend but cancelled out by D12's so it's all fair in a way.

This was to clarify for all exactly what the rules say because most people think it is interference if the rim or net is touched but that is not always the case due to the specific language of the rule.

Dub, what D12 did was actually block the ball with his hand inside the rim. that is goal-tending.

It was now clear Gasol didn't goaltend. I don't know why Phil is saying that he did.

i'm a magic fan and complained the celtic and cavs series. you dont see one post about me hating on the refs the lakers/magic finals thus far even though we are down 2-1.

reffing has been a LOT better.

If clee put that layup up and it hit the rim on way down and gasol had shook it..then i'd be pissed

I know that after many have seen the replay... they know that Lee just over threw just a tad and know that regardless it wasn't going to make it in.

But per Phil jackson's analysis he said that it was a goaltend but never mentioned howards goaltend. But then again, im pretty sure he only said it because he knew for sure the league wasn't going to reverse that play.

i'm with you guys on the bad calls on the refs these series. Maybe they just need another ref on the floor instead of 3 or at least utilize the replay more. Maybe allow a coach to contest a play and if they're wrong... take a timeout away.
We have the luxury of replays and tivo at home that's why i tend to give the refs more slack but sometimes boneheaded calls are so obvious you don't know what they even called it...

I love DVR. I freeze framed it to the moment Gasol touched the rim to see where the ball was and see if it was a violation.

DVR is one of the greatest sports fans inventions ever.

Even if it WAS a goaltend, dwight wasn't called for blatantly obvious one he did earlier in the game... any magic fan that complains about that is just bitter from the loss... Courtney's shot wasn't going in anyways
