OT - The Championship Discount

In light of the Ariza's agent saying that Trevor won't come back for a championship discount, as fans I think we should honor those guys in all sports who have at any point in their career taken less money (even if it's just deferred) in order to have the chance to WIN a championship.

I'll start by throwing out names like Gary Payton in LA, Tim Duncan, and because I'm really drawing a blank, I'll throw in Tyler Hansbrough and Matt Leinart because they passed up pro money to go back to school for a chance to win.

Throw out some more names so we can highlight these guys who truly play to win irregardless of market value.

add also, that i think ariza would take a championship discount. as mentioned in the other thread, if minnesota is offerin 5.5mil for example. he would stay here for 5.

Trevor agent said he would not take a hometown discount. His agent is puffing his chest and trying to get his client ( and himself) the most amount of money.

That being said, Trevor has bounced around from a few different teams and finally found a niche in this league. He should go after every dollar he can. He is young, has a family and nothing is ever guaranteed.

Let's not take this personal, because it is a business. It is also embarrassing to expect players to come play here for less. Nobody here would take less money at their jobs to help their owners make more.

Isn't Karl malone in that group as well?
eh hem and Shaq i believe in miami... i could be wrong.

But for ariza, i wouldn't be upset if he's commanding for money. He worked his a55 off and now that he's there, he deservies it. I just don't like the way his agent is pushing it. It makes him look greedy and not a team player. I hope he's not asking some outrageous amount. I hope us shedding some picks to get some money in return would help us keep LO and ARiza.

It really depends on the difference in contract numbers between the Lakers offer and "another team's" offer.

If someone wants to give him 7 mill a year for 4 years (28 million total).

And the Lakers offer doesn't exceed 6 mill per year for 4 years (24 million total).

That's a 4 million dollar difference .......
if I was Ariza ...
I WOULD DEFINITLEY resign at that price.

No question.
If the difference in numbers is 7 mill or more I understand him walking.
Any difference in contract that is 6 million or less ... I'd probably resign myself.

If someone gives him an extra year of 6 mill per, 30 million over 5 years, is where it would really get sticky. I'd probably buckle and sign him for that as a fan, but a part of me, as an owner, would probably feel like I'm being pimped at that price.

Ron Artest ... true warrior. I'm sure he left more money on the table in Houston.

Championship discount in effect. Artest to the Lakers. Looks like we're keeping Odom over Ariza, so Ariza's gone. I think Mitch Kupchak will have a surprise veteran minimum signing somewhere.
