He'll likely be close to retirement by the time that ever happens.

I believe it is taken out of context. He is one competitive dude, there no league more competitive/challenging for him than the NBA. He probably meant play in China not play for China. I believe he is just being diplomatic with his comments. Imagine if he said he would not play in China ever, or, why would I (as an Kobe) want to play in China?

He's an open minded person living in the present moment... people draw too much from a simple statement like being open to something.

If I remember right he said he'd also be open to playing in Europe...

expect a bidding war when his contract is up...
but yea, no way he does... it'd tarnish his legacy something fierce....

But who knows, maybe he'll do a Beckham/Pele and go international to bring Basketball to the masses in the twilight of his career....

Kobe's not an idiot. Why would he say: NO I'D NEVER PLAY THERE.

The article claims that China's most popular sport is basketball. Chine is the world's most populated country. China wants to strengthen its basketball league and the NBA wants to tap into all that cash. (Kobe's also the highest selling jersey in China)...so if asked that question why wouldn't you just say "Yeah, of course I'd consider it." It makes perfect business sense.

The same thing as Jordan's "Republicans by sneakers too."

Kobe being Kobe. Talks to the media and they think he is series. If he said he could turn water into wine. We would be reading about it all over the place.

A good business man never upsets his customers.. Just trying to amp up his jersey sales and endorsements

yet again.. the press is taking it way out of context. I'm pretty sure he will eventually but not anytime soon i don't think. Most likely while he's retiring lol. And you got to admit... they treat him like god over there.
