Side note on Riley, at the time he left the Lakers it was said he "stepped" down. Soon after he goes to work for NBC, and during a telecast one day they were on the set talking about Coach of the Year candidates. Anyway Riley blurts out, "The last time I won COY I was fired"............I found that funny, because his ex players such as Byron and Magic were holding back no punches on saying how things needed to change and his approach had gotten tired.
Wanna know the real reason the Lakers lost the 89 Finals to the Pistons look no further than Riley, he drove them into the ground in a mini training camp in Palm Springs days after winning the WCF. Next thing you know Byron blows his hamstring in the camp and Magic blew his days later in GAME 2. The rest is history. This led to the glowing praise they kept putting on new coach Mike Dunleavy, he didn't slave drive them anymore.
Some times life comes back full circle.
