I think Kobe was politicking for him in the past couple of years. I doubt he takes an assistant job, even here. He wasn't completely at fault for the drop. It was just another case of piss poor front office moves, and the GM keeps the job over the coach. Happens several times every year. He will be coaching again soon. Potentially here when the position opens.

It's funny because when the Lakers fired Pat Riley (well not publicly anyway), Byron was on record as saying he had to go and it was time for a change. But everything Byron learned about coaching he got mostly from Riley................no coincidence he turned out just like him.

Side note on Riley, at the time he left the Lakers it was said he "stepped" down. Soon after he goes to work for NBC, and during a telecast one day they were on the set talking about Coach of the Year candidates. Anyway Riley blurts out, "The last time I won COY I was fired"............I found that funny, because his ex players such as Byron and Magic were holding back no punches on saying how things needed to change and his approach had gotten tired.

Wanna know the real reason the Lakers lost the 89 Finals to the Pistons look no further than Riley, he drove them into the ground in a mini training camp in Palm Springs days after winning the WCF. Next thing you know Byron blows his hamstring in the camp and Magic blew his days later in GAME 2. The rest is history. This led to the glowing praise they kept putting on new coach Mike Dunleavy, he didn't slave drive them anymore.

one of your finer posts, Deep. I agree. I also think Byron/Riley would work with a younger change of guard for the reasons they have become successful. Now Phil is talking extension with his improved health, and I hope he does hang in there, but come time for Bynum to be a center piece (post Ron, Kobe, LO, Fish) we will no longer have a well guided team of journeymen and need a guy just like this. But then again, Kobe already runs a Riley style of leadership with nonstop workouts etc... and it seems to work just fine for him.

I posted something like this a while ago. But the triple OG's from the laker board didnt want to blame Riley for the injuries. I said that he ran them into the ground.

He would have to come here as a assistant head coach. When Phil retires he'd HAVE to be a assi. to Shaw (if shaw stays). That was the plane right? Shaw being phil's successor. He's a great Laker an all but I'm annoyed that just because of him being fired we have to make room for him when we don't really need to. But if he comes here, takes time learning an actual offense, then I'm okay with that. May take some years

Not sure Scott wants to take a step backward. But getting back into the NBA in some position needs to be his first option. I would love to see him on NBA TV or kick fat ass Barkley off TNT and do a TV gig.

I really want to give Kap the job. The Laker legends dream is to be a for real assistant coach this year.
