As is his yearly tradition, Phil handed out books to each player on this road trip.

1) Derek Fisher - "Soul on Ice" by Eldridge Cleaver.

2) Adam Morrison – "Che" – Sid Jacobson and Ernie Colon – a Graphic Biography of Che Guevara

3) Shannon Brown – "Dreams from My Father" by Barack Obama

4) Josh Powell - "The Souls of Black Folk" – W.E.B. Du Bois

5) Lamar Odom – "The Right Mistake" by Walter Mosley and 6) Andrew Bynum - "Six Easy Pieces" by Walter Mosley (1of Phil's favorite authors)

7) Sasha Vujacic – "Reservation Blues" by Sherman Alexie

8) Luke Walton –" The Monkey Wrench Gang" by Edward Abbey

9) Pau Gasol – "2666" by Roberto Bolano

10) Ron Artest – "Sacred Hoops" by Phil Jackson (helpful for new teammate to know the process)

11) Jordan Farmar – "Makes Me Wanna Holler" by Nahan McCall

12) Kobe Bryant - "Montana 1948 "by Larry Watson

13) DJ Mbenga – "Monster: the Autobiography of an LA Gang Member" by Sanyika Shakur (Author), Monster Kody Scott (Contributor)

Many ask the same question re. if they read the books. The message is in the giving hopefully they will read but if they dont Phil wont stop.

Wow. I've read the book he recommended for Kobe. That's a little too close to home, isn't it? :o

What's Phil's purpose been with having his players read particular books? DJ Mbenga's book title is awesome haha

I read a bit of the description for Kobe's book. Molestation of a young girl? Errr.

He gave Ron Ron his own book - wonder if it's an autographed first edition?

He gave Sasha book that 10th graders have to read - subliminally suggesting Sasha should've gone to school instead of turning pro?

He gave Farmar, Mbenga, Powell and Ammo social commentary biographies - must be trying to get their inner anger to rise up and quit being passive.

Shann got Obama. Hope he gets it autographed come White House day :)

Love Walter Mosley. Dude can craft a story. Nice for LO and Drew.

edit- totally missed Fisher's... Soul on Ice for the man with Ice in his veins.

Did he give Ammo Che because of looks alone?

I have read a few of the those books. One that I re-read recently was MBenga's " Monster".

Good stuff.

Phil could've gotten him "Pistol: The Life of Pete Maravich".
