Healthy Bynum + Gasol = Wins

Post#1 » by kobesmyhomie » Fri Apr 16, 2010 7:39 pm

When Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol were healthy in the just-completed 2009-10 regular season, the Lakers went 38-12. That’s a 76 percent win ratio.

When one or both have been hurt, the Lakers went 19-13, a 59 percent win ratio.

L.A. actually managed to go 2-0 when neither big man played in November wins against Memphis and New Orleans at home. The Lakers went 9-6 without Gasol, and 8-7 with no Bynum.

Gasol closed the season on an absolute tear, averaging 27.6 points, 11.0 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2.8 blocks while shooting 65 percent from the field in the five games prior to Wednesday’s season finale (in which he scored 18 points with 17 rebounds in 27 minutes).

Bynum, meanwhile, has maintained for a week that he will play in L.A.’s playoff opener against Oklahoma City on Sunday, allowing Lamar Odom to return to the bench and re-establishing a crucial element to what makes the Lakers so difficult to play against.

Can we get an amen?

And a healthy Kobe while we're at it.

Here's a good plan: Let Bynum and Gasol take advantage of a small OKC lineup in the first round so Kobe can "coast" so-to-speak to heal up a little. If we play a team like Dallas later on, with Marion and Butler smothering Kobe, he'll need to use most of his limited energy in that kind of series. I worry about Kobe trying to do too much in this round, either to prove that he's just fine, or to one-up Durant.

I share the same thoughts. Bryant will need to be healthy for those top teams to get us over the hump. I think he understands the place and time to carry the club and this one coming up might not be one of them. Oklahoma's inexperience and size will hurt them so, there won't be any need to go all out for Bryant. He's been here before, though, he'll play his game and his style. Facilitate, and know when to attack and assert himself. There isn't anything the Thunder can throw at Bryant that he hasn't already seen before.

While an entire team healthy and playing in rhythm is great, Bryant is the key to our title hopes.

I hope Bynum is healthy enough by the next couple games. I'd love to see Gasol drop 40+ on Jeff Green. I like Green and all but, Pau's the worst possible matchup for a tweener.

After watching the Chi-Cle game the importance of a center able to score and defend is so apparent. I feel if Chi had a center that could do this they may have won this very crucial game 1 over a team that finished the season with the best record.

Lets face it at this point it does not take much to defend and score against Shaq, Anderson and the big V but Chi has nothing, I felt sorry for Noah he did his best.

Our bigs will have no prob defending and scoring agains Cle's big men.

In closing to circle back to my point is, the need for a big man shows up so clearly in the play-offs and for all of those wanting to trade away one of the few true big men in the league, i say shame on you and watch other teams in the playoff's that dont have true bigs and see what a difficult time they have winning this very different than normal season game (or series).

We wont trade Andrew because of what he can do and the potential he hides in his pockets regardless of how much the uninformed panic when he suffers an injury or has a bad game.

 well when you put it that way...

I guess I read that as you directing it to the OP. My bad. But I think the article makes a point that the sky might not be falling as much as some have thought.

We need MBenga to kick some 4$$ while were at it. If he can beast for 5 to 10 mins a game and be a bruiser it will keep the other teams centers from catching their breath.

i agree with this totally! i dont see why all these people want to get rid of bynum. injured or not, he poses a huge threat to opposing teams. we need him to contend with the other high class teams. a big pet peev of mine is that we will go to the post a lot in the first quarter, dominate, then become a perimeter team for the rest of the game.. i think we need to keep our big men more involved through out the game. i think that will keep drew more interested in the game.. cuz we all know how he gets bored sometimes and just kinda disappears haha
