Magic is more likable but Kobe HAS passed him

The only reason its hard to give him that honor now is his shot selection last night. He was trying to draw a foul on 5 of those attempts.

1 Reason) Kobe has passed him with his record setting performances such as all the streaks, 81 points, 62-61
2 Reason) Kobe has passed him with stellar defense
3 Reason) Kobe has passed him by winning with 2 completely different teams
4 Reason) Kobe has passed him with longevity, most Laker points, most play-off wins...

Statistically what Kobe needs to do add yet another dazzling chapter to his overall game is go after a career high assist game. We know Kobe can get 20 assist but he has never done it. If he did that now and played like Magic I think it would go a long way for most Laker fans.

It would be great to see career highs of 81 ponts 20 assists 24 rebs 8 blocks 10 steals.

i rank kobe 3rd alltime right now,but could he have done it without pj?
How's this for an almost unbelievable Laker trivia: The Lakers will miss the playoffs this year for the 3rd time since 1976.
Just 3 times in almost 40 years!!!!

i said this year, that if he gets this championship, he will surpass magic. and that is hard to say, but im not going to measure it in stats. because clearly, the assist is a big thing to me, in how your teammates are involved. in that regards, no one stands with magic. But im not measuring it on that scale, the only scale im measuring it on is CHAMPIONSHIPS! and magic has brought 5 and so has kobe. but since KOBEs book is still unfinished, he has more in the tank to get the hallowed jordan mark and the celtic title number of 17.

He is now onto the next peak to conquer. JORDAN/CELTIC17. and he is the only one who at this point has the opportunity to eclipse those 2 once thought of as unachievable numbers.

So Kobe gets a Statue? Would retiring Shaqs number tarnish Kobes legacy? Will the Laker organization ever do such a thing now that Kobe is greatest ever level with the Lakers org? I don't think Kobe would care if he got a sixth ring. Shaq would be way beneath him by then.

I'm wondering what the older Laker fans on this board think? I grew up watching Magic and I have a hard time believing that anyone who watched Magic can think that Kobe is better. Magic is the best PG in the history of the game and it's not even close.

That's back to back championships he's led the Lakers to in addition to 3 straight Finals appearance since the debacle that occurred from the previous dynasty. Scoring, leadership, intensity, star appeal, accolades, and numbers to date all add up to an impressive resume on the Lakers greats. He's still hasn't dethroned Magic, though. Not in my book.

Been a Laker fan since 1980, just posted my opinion above. Magic is very sentimental and very special for many including non Laker fans but the NBA in general during my era, but Kobe is truly a talent that is something else, he is only 31 and it is scary to see what the next 5,6,7 or maybe even 8 years will bring. He will obliterate almost every Laker record and have many many personal as well as team accolades.

There is simply NO WAY as a player, one would put magic 2nd to anyone, even KOBE. But this is not about statistical data, or even making your teammates better. The point is titles. I dont see KOBE stopping at 5. Dude has potential not only to win 1 more, but heck, this squad can go for a 4peat possibly even a 5, which would mean 7 or 8 TOTAL!! That is unheard of, even beyond jordan standards.

To me, the greatest player of all time is magic, because he can play ALL 5 POSITIONS. However, with that said, as a LAKER fan, this is about this franchise winning CHAMPIONSHIP BANNERS! And at this point in time, KOBEs potential to win a few more, coupled with the fact that he has already been key in providing 5 . . . places him at the top.

so NOT the better player. NOT the stats. NOT the ability. But the placement of CHAMPIONSHIP banners in the staples. Thats what its all about. KOBE has the potential to do more in that area, than magic or any other LAKER in the history of this franchise.

Magic was in a really tough era though. That Celtics team was pretty damn good too. You also had a great Pistons team, the Rockets, and later on the Bulls (and several other good teams). Magic's career was unfortunately shut down early. Who knows what the Lakers would have done? Maybe they sign another top flight free agent to pair with Magic and he wins 1 or 2 more. I understand the longevity thing, but I think it's a little overrated. I just think Magic is one of the greatest players I've ever watched. I get that feeling with Kobe too, but more so with Magic.

Nope. See avatar. He has to have a better game in a Game 7 for me to pass that torch.

Im sorry magic but kobe has 5 rings now. You might be his equal at best only thing you have over him is your height (playing center) watching magic's highlights is very boring compared to kobe's as his skill set is beyond yours. btw you also dont play defense.

That's ban worthy :o ! To me MJ, Hakeem, Kobe, Magic, Bird are five most exciting players ever and Magic is #1 on that list. To say what you just said...
Kobe is definitely not greatest Laker ever. Magic Johnson is and it's not that close. To me he needs at least 7 with 4 finals MVP's to surpass him..even then I'm not sure. Magic is fourth greatest player of all time in my list while Kobe is tied with Tim Duncan @ 8 / 9 spot.

Why on earth would kobe need at least 7? he practically own every laker record. Besides it does not matter what we think ...magic already said himself so its over.

Are you kidding me? I'm not even a Lakers fan, but watching Magic play is dazzling.

Statistics can't determine whether Kobe is your team GOAT. They show a great deal, but are inherently limited in fully assessing a player's legacy or potential.
