What would you do ... ?
... if you were Shannon Brown? In or Out?
Knowing what you know about the market and the risk involved in leaving money on the table ... what would you do if you were in his shoes?

I would opt out. He could get some of the leftover money that is around Post Lebron/Wade/Bosh/Johnson signings.
Although didn't he agree to the LLE as a paycut last season to win again?

I'D BUST A MOVE
srsly, i'd opt out and go for more security. lakers have my early bird rights. i wouldn't ask for a pay rise, just more years.

I would stay and improve my game.
I thought he took a step backward after a very promising first season with the Lakers.
Sure, he is atheletic and flashy and a crowd pleaser with his amazing dunks.
But he needs to imrpove his game.
He has not really shown that he can fit into this offense and help run the offense
also he needs to get better defensively

Re: What would you do ... ?
1) Shannon Brown stood out during these past season because the team as a whole seriously lacked athleticism. If DeBanks makes the team, you can Bank that he will be Bangin rims. He will neutralize Shannon Brown on the athleticism department.
2) The coaching staff has used shannon more as an SG and has not hinted in any way that he will take over as a starting guard after Fish is gone. Therefore Shannon can expect that his role will not change as a member of the Lakers. He will be non more than a gadget player for as long as he plays here.
3) Given what Mitch has seen with Luke, Sasha, Morrison, Radman, etc, why would he want to give longevity (and more money) to another considered one trick pony? what if the pony forgets the trick like Sasha forgot how to be a machine?
4) Phil wont be here forever. Most likely, future head coach will want a more traditional guard==>FirstRoundDraftPick. Drafts these days come loaded with capable PGs==> a facilitating PG which will further neutralize Shannon's effect on the team.
Conclusion: Opt out, move on while you're still fresh in the minds of executives. Forget the money - look for job security. All these teams clearing their space for the big names will need solid backups.

I'd look for more years too...
We're heading towards a potential lock-out so it might be hard for him to get a contract after the current one expires...
I'd opt out and look for a 4yr deal, so I had some security during and after the lock-out...

Re: What would you do ... ?
I think if he opts out he will lose money in the long run.
Why? Because his stock will be as high next year as it is now.
Right now, he couldn't get anything longer than a 2 year deal for 2 million per from another team. Believe it.
If he opts out, I believe he runs the risk of actually getting less than what he would make next year if didn't opt out (hope you followed that) and he also runs the substantial risk of going somewhere else (for 4 million total, 2yrs) and falling out of the rotation, lanquishing on the bench and diminishing his value for the next contract.
I'd opt in ... it'll piss off the Lakers but I do it anyway because it's the smart thing to do.
John Salmons is another dude who should've opted in. Now, instead of making like 6 million next year and starting on a playoff team, he'll be lucky to get 4 million next year.
It's not always best to opt out ... ask Bonzi.

I'd opt out, too. Just for his own benefit. I can't say I'd blame him, but I'd be bummed out to see him go.

Re: What would you do ... ?
Catch 22:
1st off - There is NO market next summer for him. The owners will cease all player signings until the new CBA is hammered out. It will take too long and they will lockout to avoid having to pay ANY contracts for the '11-12 season - at least until the new season starts up (like in 99 when the 98-99 year started in January). If he opts In, and is contractless, he'll have to scramble for a deal at that point in '12 and who knows what the new CBA will hold (but we know it will be less player slanted than now).
Or, he opts Out, takes a small deal in the 2-3 range to try and get a 3 year so he's got a guarantee when the lockout ends. THIS is why everyone (Salmons, Chandler, etc) are probably opting out or getting an extension (Melo for inst). Nobody, unless a prime target, wants to scramble to find a deal after the next CBA comes and the lockout ends.
He has to opt out for career security even if it means less $ over the next 3 yrs.

We've already seen him long enough to realize his shortcomings. Pretty soon everyone in the league will know his limitation as a SG and his lack of IQ to play PG. Shannon may not have figured this out yet, but it would be best for him to opt out now for a longer contract. The longer Shannon plays heavy minutes the lower his stock will be.

Very interesting take ... not sure if I understand it all but interesting nonetheless.
Questions:
-- Do players get paid during a lockout?
I think no, so doesn't that render your arguement moot?
-- If he gets a two year 4 million dollar deal from someone, would you take that over 2.2 next year and becoming a free agent next summer?
I say no because he knows he has a role here and sometimes there is no real price on knowing and having a role for your team (in this case a champonship team). He could go somewhere else, for under 2.2 next year (say 1.5 per over 2 yrs) and be out of the rotation on a lousy team.
-- Where would that leave him after his next 2yr contract is up?
He might be borderline out of the league again.
If I were Shannon Brown, a man who was almost discarded from the league, I'd take the 2.2 and enjoy the exposure and experience of being in the rotation on another championship team. After next year, I sign a new deal, which may or may not be be more than the 2.2 he'll make next year.
Good post though fivestar.

I think the entire league knows what Shannon Brown is ... it's not like he ended the season on a high note.
How much and how many years do you think he'll get?
I think he'll get a 2 year deal for under 2.2; something like 2 years, 3.5 total.

IMO he hasn't played enough yet to expose his weakness to the general public. With this year's FA sweepstakes teams are going to try to spend to justify the hard earned capspace they have created, and no doubt some team who loses out or have already acquired a star FA will pick up Brown and show fans his highlight reels as a reason for their signing even though they prefer someone else.
