Captain.
And rumor has it that Magic's nickname was "Buck".

Teammates nicknamed Magic "Buck" as a rookie, as in "who is this young buck flying all over the court?"
I think it went away a few years into his career as players like Norm Nixon and Jamaal Wilkes moved on and Magic continued to take more of a leadership role with players like Worthy, Scott, and AC coming in and rounding out the starting five for the '85 and back to back title teams in '87 and '88.
And also, anyone who is posting that the '96 Bulls would easily defeat the '88 Lakers...wow - I really have to question your knowledge of the game and its history. While I highly doubt the Bulls would win, it may be a somewhat plausible scenario - again, I don't think so - but, easily? Come on...

That's what I've been trying to say here and on the Bulls forum.

Magic's nickname early on was "buck" short for "young buck"! When Kareem got injured in Game 5 of the '80 Finals the Lakers were traveling back to Philly for Game 6 & everyone just knew without the Cap it was going to Game 7. Magic said "have no fear, number 32 is here

Man people need to quit with the 96 Bulls BS, people act like they ran the gauntlet on the league when in fact they had several close games that they just manage to pull out. Another thing that goes over people heads is they only had 2 long winning streaks during that season, a 13 game then a 18 game.
That team would've gotten their assess kick royally by the 85 Lakers or 87.....take your pick it wouldn't have mattered.

At one point in the season, the Bulls were 41-3. Not bad.

I seriously doubt any championship team with Jordan would've gotten their asses kicked by anyone - especially the 96 team - which some say is the best defensive team of all time.
Having said that, the 96 Bulls were weak at center, and the Lakers could have taken advantage of that with Jabbar. I think it would have been a great series, and the outcome would have depended on how much the Lakers were able exploit Luc Longley with Jabbar and Michael Thompson.

Everyone is always start struck by Jordan. The difference maker on that team against the '85 or '87 Lakers would have been Rodman. Magic, Kareem, & Worthy would have had their way but Rodman on the boards is the difference maker so the series probably goes longer but we still win in 6. This is why the 1st Bulls 3 peat teams aren't mentioned as much, no Rodman. Jordan was on all 6 title teams.

Re: 96 Bulls vs. 88 Lakers...who would win ?

Read about the 88 Laker team and found out:
The Pistons got the ball to Thomas at midcourt with seconds remaining as fans began to enter the court, and Thomas was knocked to the ground by Magic Johnson, who began celebrating with 2 seconds left on the clock. Thomas was unable to get off a shot, no foul was called, the referees ignored the fact that fans were on the floor before time expired, and the game was over. Pat Riley and the Laker players hurried back to their dressing room.
Amazing that this hasn't been talked about, considering that I think the Lakers would sweep the 1996 Bulls. They only would need to get the lead and the officials would call it a game.
