Like I said, if this were a couple of years ago even, then I'd be pretty comfortable with Kobe. But, as high a level as he's managed to maintain -- which is pretty remarkable, and a testament to his work ethic (something LeBron will never be able to touch) -- he's had some noticeable slippage. James, on the other hand, is just entering his prime. I kind of agree with Bill Simmons in that, after all the backlash, he's almost gotten to be underrated.

I guess my view of him is colored by history, particularly the way they used to judge Jordan and Shaq for being losers. Now how do those assessments look?

That said, I agree that your take about how his image will be impacted upon winning is more probable than mine. I guess because I (usually) try to make honest assessments, I expect everyone else will as well. Just as I don't think it's fair that Kobe gets marked down for having played next to Shaq, I don't think it's fair to punish James for playing next to Wade.

That said, I think you're right in that it's going to happen.

You're also dead-on how quickly things can change. All it takes is one bad (or good, for that matter) break to significantly alter the expected outcomes. So a decade of dominance was probably stretching it. But I definitely would be surprised if James doesn't win anywhere between 3 and 5 championships with Miami.

I hope not, but then, I wouldn't be happy with anyone winning besides us. Boston -- blah. San Antonio -- double blah. And on and on.

I don't see how the best player in the league could go and get another top 5 player and another top 10 player on his team and people just say well hey if he wins multiple titles people will forget, WTF? what about Kobe he has 5 count em 5 rings and people say 3 with Shaq and 2 with Gasol not dissing anyone here but it seems like if Lbj wins rings people will think well he earned them, it pisses me off that Kobe worked his whole career to get to where he's at and people still bitch about the shaq thing now its gasol oh wait he has phil yada yada just a bunch of bull

Not since a couple years ago. There are a few players I think are better right now, but considering Kobe's age and mileage, the fact that his name is still mentioned among them is incredible. Think about where all the other players from his draft class are, and where Kobe is. Astonishing and why I admire him so much.

Things can change in a hurry, and if the Heat start winning then other teams will find a way to counter. That assumes that they start winning NOW, because there are still some tough teams that they have to contend with. They'll have to battle the Celtics, Bulls, and Magic in their own conference, and either the Spurs, Mavs, or Lakers in the Finals. Bosh and Wade aren't exactly iron men, and I'd be willing to go as far as saying that losing a player like Ilgauskas would be extremely costly. If LeBron or Wade gets injured in the playoffs then they have exactly no shot of winning.

I think a lot has to go right for that team to win multiple championships, and that may not be until other teams start their decline.

Good post Semi, but Lebron is just incredible. As much as I hate that mofo, he makes the game look easy. He's the best athlete I've ever seen. It takes the best TEAM defense to take him down.

Wade. Bosh, do they really matter? He was more productive with a bunch of good role players players in CLE. You know who was the most underrated player on that team Varejo, that kid plays his azz off.

Anyway he's always going to be a tough out, but Chicago with Tibedou and when they get Noah back can be a beast team. East is gonna be a tough group.

Kind of a intresting question.

I think Kobe is the best when he needs to be.... Does that make sense? I do not think that he can go crazy night in and night out for an entire regular season and then deep into the playoffs at this point the way lebron can.

He may be able to just have a crazy nuts game here and their, but I do not think he can even do that too much in th 82 regular season games.

What I think he can do, is take over the game when he has to, pass when he has to, rebound when he has to, and defend when he has to. Its like he has mastered the game at this point imho.

He will have a very quit first half then go off in the third. Or he will initiate the offense for 4 quarters, just setting everything into motion and play within the flow of the offense, never forcing anything.

Kobe has the most 20 point halfs in the league and he is "only" averaging 25 points. That tells me he can score any time he needs to.
