Buying a first round pick
Would the Lakers go out and spend the money to buy a first round pick. The most I think is 3 million a team can spend. If the right player was there and he could help and no Phil to sit rookies on the bench. I wounder would it be worth it.

Re: Buying a first round pick
I would do it. However it is more likely that we trade up in the early 2nd round because there is no guarenteed contract. I would only trade into the 1st round for a guy that could contribute right away like Nolan Smith or Reggie Jackson.

Re: Buying a first round pick
Well one of the main goals Mitch tried to achieve when trading our original pick was to get rid of the guaranteed contract that comes with them. I'm not sure what they'll do now but if they do, it'll make them look foolish for trading away our pick to begin with.
There isn't really much of a gap talent wise between the late 1st round (which is probably what we'd end up with if we tried to buy) and the 2nd round. So if we're targeting a prospect that is a late 1st/early 2nd and wanted to buy a pick, we're better off just buying a high 2nd. It's cheaper and there isn't a guaranteed contract.

Re: Buying a first round pick
I think the only way that we trade some of our second rounds picks and or buy a first is if the guy we want is available. Who that is I don't know because looking at the expected draft order and assuming that we are going to be trying to draft at one of our needs (pg, pf) I don't really see anyone in the early twenties that is worth wasting 3 M on. I like the idea of trying to get Nolan but I think we could get him if we just try to trade two seconds for a higher second round pick, or something similar. However this is going off of what I said earlier that it would have to be for the guy that we really wanted.

Not in this draft...

My goodness I have been saying this all year. Ebanks got his NBA cred in the NCAA tourney for shutting down John Wall in the Tourney. This kid is the goods! I mean he is a legit 6' 9 SF and he Deed up on probably one the fastest most athletic point guards in the NBA! Can this kid get some burn please?!
Caracter held his own against the Pacers and Pistons starting front line during the summer league dude still gets no respect?! What up with that?!

Re: Buying a first round pick
For those attempting to read the tea leaves on Shannon Brown's player option, little information was provided in his exit interview....
Last season, I was convinced he'd opt in after a hand injury derailed a terrific first half, but he proved me wrong. This year, who knows? Should he reenter free agency, however, I'm not certain the Lakers will move heaven and earth to keep him. Between this year's regression and Devin Ebanks being told to work on his guard skills, the parting of ways feels like a possibility. Still, Brown is a hard worker and the Lakers could use athleticism (albeit in a more-refined package), so another go around certainly isn't impossible.

Re: Buying a first round pick
getting ebanks last year was a steal I thought and now that we don't have PH11L anymore then I really hope that the younger players can get some play. Character looked okay last year when he got ont he court I thought and I have no idea why when Ratliff went down that he couldn't buy any minutes. Please Rick A. lets play these young guys and give the older guys some rest every now and then so we can be fresh when we get to the playoffs next year.

Re: Buying a first round pick
Can you imagine EBanks sliding in at the 2 wow! I think a defensive team of Ebanks, Odom and Artest can really put Dirk and Durrant to work next season

Spot on HOOPS, it's sad we couldn't showcase these guys. Any other team would have played these guys right off the bat.

Re: Buying a first round pick
caracter was a beast in summer league play austin daye was the only big that was in the summer league that gave him trouble. austin is much quicker on the floor, handles like a guard and has more range than your typical big. Thus I wouldn't go and put caracter on Dirk or anything. But greg Monroe, Authur, Hibbett, and Aminu all couldn't slow caracter down. He scored at will. His rebounding was lacking, his defense was not stellar but pretty solid.
