Abdul-Jabbar: Bynum needs to calm his ego

Post#1 » by dockingsched » Fri Apr 20, 2012 11:41 pm

KAJ went on sportscenter today, here's a link to the vid. Bynum part starts around 3 min.

http://espn.go.com/blog/los-angeles/lak ... o-calm-ego

Hall of Fame center and former Laker great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar went on Sportscenter on Friday to discuss his upcoming appearance on Jeopardy and his children's book, but one of the things Lakers fans will be most interested in is Kareem's answer when asked what advice he would give to Andrew Bynum. Watch the interview below.

My rough transcript:

"Bynum is doing really well on the court, he just needs to calm his ego. may be its starting to get to him how successful he's been. i don't know, im speaking from afar, just think its gone to his head"
"We must try not to sink beneath our anguish, Harry, but battle on." - Dumbledore

Ive been thinking Bynums swag meter has been on high lately. I understand you need swag out there on the court but c'mon man. He has to learn how to somewhat hide the ego.

Hahahaha classic!!! Bynum needs to chill though, I don't like that ego. It's going to get him nowhere if he keeps playing inconsistently. I can't stand that ego, if only he was putting up Shaq type numbers MAYBE it'd be easier to deal with, it's very frustrating though.

Yep......but he better start to channel that crap soon, cause if he falls off again it will come back on that ass from all angles.

IDK I like that passion the dude has, I like he has the desire to want to dominate and I like that fact that the dude gets angry when his teammates are playing stupid or not helping on defense, but as DEEP said he needs to learn how to channel it and use it effectively.

how many of us are significantly older than 24? how many of us who are, remember what colossal pricks we were at that time? of those of us, how many had been on the road since age 17, or have millions of dollars, and fame, with that level of success?

he'll be fine, he is young , and has the type of persoanlity which wouldve benefitted greatly from college...so some aspects of his maturity is a bit delayed...big whoop...

Agreed. As fans we want to rush him to where we want him to be but its a real life issue. Maturity is a process. Kobe was not always the Kobe of late his whole career. Takes time, but in reality I dont think this "ego" is connected to his efforts. If he was a more humble acting shy guy like he used to be he would have still had 2 rebounds against the Spurs last night.

Humility and shyness aren't even remotely related. And ego is absolutely connected to effort. Ego allows you to think it's cool to throw multiple temper tantrums to "motivate" your teammate while you aren't playing with an ounce of effort. He's been in the NBA for seven seasons now, it shouldn't be an issue. Especially in the middle of his breakout year.

I dont know. The passion seems more self-related than team-related. ie.. i think he wants to be a recognized superstar more than he cares about another championship. Its better than having a player who doesnt care but I hope he matures into a duncan/kg type player.

How does that make you better than the Lin, Gallo, and Wil fans who root for them over NY?

I'm going to piggy back this a bit Big Game and here's my reason. Not only do you have to hide it a bit, its also a counter to him at times. What I mean by that is if he has his head up his butt we don't get the beast & that's the part I don't like. Bring the beast every night & I can put up with a higher swag meter.

Mike Brown: "To me, the difference in the game is Andrew Bynum. He can control the game without shooting a single shot if he wanted to. He can literally control the game without taking a shot. That's how good he is. He had 10 blocks here, but I'd be curious to know or see how many he probably changed. He changed a gazillion shots in the paint."
