I totally agree about the cap space argument, and I don't even waste my time worrying with people who argue it. Because the fact of the matter is GM's aren't going to let their star players leave for absolutely nothing. People are basing that argument off of seeing what happened in Cleveland, and totally forgetting that it was Cleveland and Toronto who reached out to Miami about doing a S&T after the fact when James and Bosh made their announcements. They didn't get any players because Miami cleared the slate and didn't have any to offer, but they got picks.
But as far as Brooklyn wanting Gasol, I don't see that. They're an extremely young team and want talent that they can build around for the years to come. Pau's significantly closer to retirement than his rookie year, and by the time Brooklyn is ready to make some noise in the east, Pau will already past his prime and won't be a factor in the least bit. Which is why Gasol would have to be traded to a team that's contending right now and can get the most out of him during their run that also has younger pieces that Brooklyn would accept.
But Like you said by the time the Nets are ready to start contending Gasol will pass his prime...i.e. contract just about up. At the point Pau could be an expiring or big money thats just coming off the books.
