I'm going to caveat this by saying it's probably slightly unhealthy how much I like MKG, but I just can't help but see the Pippen potential in him. These are the facts ...'
-He's a proven winner: high school, aau and college
-He's the youngest player in this draft and had a huge jump in skills from high school to freshman year
-He's tailor made to play along side a big usage guy like Kobe because he figures out how to plug in
-There is no other player in the draft that can guard 3 positions like him
-He's used to playing with NBA caliber talent
-He is a notorious gym rat, which Kobe would eat up and respect
-He is a good kid with a good head on his shoulders - plays smart
Lastly, and perhaps the most important, teams that don't have players who can penetrate in the half court set or take it to the rack in 1 on 1, 1 on 2 and 1 on 3 situations in fast breaks ... are at a real disadvantage in this league these days. And I can't remember a player in the NCAA that so fearlessly and relentlessly attacks the rim better than MKG in the last 5 years - maybe Derrick Rose. Attacking the rim is an art - an intuition - you either have it or you don't.
Having said all that, the Lakers probably missed their shot to get him .. if they had sniffed out the Washington/New Orleans trade before it happened, they could have jumped into a 3-way where they took on Okafor and received the #3 pick. Also, we probably would have been able to scoop up Jarrett Jack in that deal too. Overall, a big miss by the FO by my estimation - but they've still got the assets to make something happen.
