James Worthy was a clutch, veteran all - star in his prime then. Byron Scott could drop threes and explode at the rim off the break or in the half court set. He was also underrated defensively because he played on the same team as Michael Cooper. .

Tho difficult to compare eras, for me the greatest will always be the first. A starting backcourt that averaged 51.7 pts per game. A starting frontcourt that pulled down 38.8 rebs per game, and scored 46.7 pts per game. A team that went 69-13. That outscored opponents 121 to 108 for the season. The backup center/PF was good enuf that he averaged a double double for the next two seasons after leaving the Lakers (those would be the 4th and 5th times he'd averaged a double-double for a season) - Leroy Ellis. The backup SF was one of the finest defensive players ever in Keith Erickson. The backup main guard, Flynn Robinson, was a 4 time 19pt or better scorer in the league (he gave us 9.9 pts in only 15 minutes a game behind Goodrich and West). The FOURTH string guard was a pretty smart guy - Pat Riley - he got us 7 pts a game in only 13 minutes off the bench.

Again, tough to compare across eras - but measured by the level of dominance versus their peers (ie how much better was the 87 team than the rest of the league that year compared to how much better the 72 team was than THEIR league opponents) - 1972 was the greatest.
