u can't bid with the mle or lle, it has to be capspace. the clippers used cap space last yr to bid on billups.

He can only do that if nobody bids on him and he clears waivers. That was how Baron Davis was able to sign with the Knicks.

That's partially right, but not by clearing waivers. The bidding process starts right after the player is waived. When a player CLEARS waivers, and that only happens when a team doesn't try to claim them or bid on them (Amnesty), he becomes a unrestricted free agent. That was the reason why Billups was warning teams NOT to bid on him so that he can clear waivers and then sign with any team he wanted to.

And citing sources, ESPN's Marc Stein reports one move Howard wants Orlando to make is to sign free-agent point guard Chauncey Billups after he clears waivers.

But before this situation can play out, Billups must clear waivers. Teams below the salary cap may enter blind bids on players waived via the amnesty clause, with the team submitting the highest bid earning the rights to that player. Billups' agent, Andy Miller, has tried scaring teams away from claiming off waivers. "Buyer beware," Miller said. Nonetheless, the Charlotte Bobcats may call Billups' bluff and claim him anyway. Further, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports the New Jersey Nets might claim Billups in the hopes of luring Howard.

Baron Davis was the player that got amnestied, then cleared waivers and was able to sign with the Knicks. Same with Gilbert Arenas and the Grizzlies.

Do you think anyone will pick him up?

Depends on who else is available. I think teams under the cap might try to go after the big name free agents first, but getting Calderon in a similar deal like how the Clippers got Billups (2 mill) would be a steal.

If it was possible I'd do Calderon for Odom trade exception.

The Toronto Raptors are quietly getting unexpected moral support from the Los Angeles Lakers in their quest to sign Steve Nash.

Reason being: Sources say that the Lakers -- as long as they retain Pau Gasol -- have an inside track to sign point guard Jose Calderon if the Raptors, as expected, must amnesty Calderon's contract to create the needed salary-cap space to sign Nash.

Thought I'd pass this along since you have an existing thread here

We were discussing about this on a similar thread over in the Raptor forum. The Odom exception isn't large enough to absorb Calderon's contract even if he waives the trade kicker. Other than that, if Calderon does get amnestied, he'll be a hot ticket item to any team needing a point guard. Could see teams like Sacramento or Indiana making a bid. Then again, Calderon can pull a Billups and secretly land in the Lakers.

Not gonna lie, I think Calderon would be a good fit for you guys. With Dwayne Casey, I was shocked to see Calderon play defense.

We're screwed for at least 2 years or so financially. We just can't do anything business wise due to our twisted finances. We won't get Calderon because we have no cap space, and non playoff teams get the first bids.

There is still an option of a trade.

Calderon(big,expiring contract) for Peace + Eyenga + 1st rounder

Chicago could also use him until Rose gets back.

Why on earth would you trade our best defensive player for Calderon? Calderon has pretty good court vision but is a very average scorer that cant score in creative ways, no athleticism, and is probably a worse than Sessions on defense.

Calderon is overrated. All he does is pound the ball for 20 seconds and then passes. This guy will literally take Kobe's bailout shots to another level. We need a quick, explosive and defensive oriented PG.

I wouldn't wanna trade MWP either but Calderon is an assist monster and if Lakers actually knew how to run a pick and roll, I'd say get him

Too bad we don't know how to run anything except corner ISO's for Bynum and backscreens for Kobe
