I actually like Dantoni a lot and think in the end this will pay off, but I also ask myself would Pop leave Duncan in? No he wouldn't he has the ultimate respect from his players in every desicion he makes! And that makes me extremely jealous cuz I wish Kobe and Dwight would have the same attitude! Dantoni should b able to make these decisions without any hesitation but he has to look over his shoulder and make sure his stars aren't whining about it...they just need to man up! If Kobe is ball hogging yank his butt out the game! Pull D12 out during these lame tactics! In PHX and NY Dantoni was a fiery no nonsense type of coach and he needs to get back to that wether he benching over dribbling idiotic decision making Morris or Kobe for going hero ball when it's unessecary!

One of the complaints Howard had in Orlando was wanting the ball more at the end of games. You can imagine from that how he would feel about being benched in the fourth. The sad truth is at least for this year he has you by the balls like he did Orlando and keeping him happy is going to be the primary goal of the front office so don't expect him to be "punished" for costing your team wins. The guy is just mentally weak, his free throw shooting has gotten worse during his career not better.

Re: LAKERS vs ROCKETS @ 5:00pm PST on TWCSN (12/4/2012)
The reason the Hack a Howard is so effective against us is that we're trying to be a whole court team that runs all the time, and we don't play any D anymore... We have no idea what to do when the pace slows down and we have no answer in half-court sets.
So teams hack howard, they get more possessions, we get fewer points, and it breaks down our Defense as well as our Offense... It's really a can't lose scenario for them...
And unlike when we had Shaq, who would rise to the occasion and start draining FTs when he started getting hacked, Dwight doesn't... And we don't have the Triangle anymore to run an effective half-court set...
I see it... I know a lot of you guys see it... The other teams and coaches see it...
Not really sure why we can't figure it out.
I'll say it again... We are NOT like any team Nashtoni has coached before... His usual methods are not going to be effective with the talent we have. And if we remake our team in their image, I don't see us being any more effective than they were...
One thing seems obvious though... Dantoni is right, he only seems truly effective when Nash is on the floor.

i don't understand how you make the correlation that by slowing the pace down, the lakers forget how to play defense.
espn / tim legler had a nice breakdown of how the lakers were just playing lazy defense down the stretch, singled out kobe and how he didn't fight through screens, tried to beat his man to the spot by going around them only to have his man go the other way and leave the lakers D in miserable help and recover situations. i don't think that had anything to do with hack-a-howard.

I was being more generous than you...
Obviously they weren't playing Defense last night... We haven't shown much of an ability to play D all season, except maybe for the few Bickerstaff games. It's horrible, and it seems to get worse as games go on.
But beyond last night, in general, slowing down the pace is how you take running teams off their game. As we've seen with almost all of the great running teams, when you break up their offensive flow, their defense tends to break down. That's what Phil used to preach and it's what we saw happen to Showtime until they figured out how to play better defense.
And what better way to slow the pace than hacking howard? You're trading a likely 1 point for 2 or 3.

Re: (Non-Laker fan perspective) Hack-A-Dwight
I completely dislike D'Antoni and believe he is a terrible coach but this is one of the few things I agree on with him. Dwight is young and the goal is to develop him into a franchise player. He just needs to get that part of his game down in order to fulfill his potential. Hiding him is only gonna drop his confidence even further and is not gonna do anything in terms of improving him in that regard. It's obvious his problem is 90% mental as he is able to hit 80% from the FT line in practice. I rather have my player go out there and try and fail and try again then hiding him on the bench. Only in the playoffs I'd go a different route. I know fans want to win every single game and the Lakers need to make up some ground but in the big picture these early games aren't THAT important , it's more important to try everything possible to fix this problem.

not sure how much rhythm there was, from the 6:11 mark when kobe and howard both checked in, kobe took every single shot until hack-a-howard started. in fact, aside from the MWP miss with 1 second left, every single recorded field goal attempt in the 4th quarter after kobe checked in, was by kobe.
May be that was the offense. He was single covered in the 4th quarter, no way he's looking to do anything but score when that happens.
At this point a Kobe contested shot is likely a higher probability of success than Dwight's FTs.

The free throws are an issue and I do not see it improving at all. Mike D needs to adjust and work around this.

If by improvement you mean up his percentage up over 50%. That's still horrible and won't scare teams off the Hack-a-Dwight crap if he's in there.
If he shot 60%, you are starting to approach the point where it's a zero net gain (or possibly net loss) for the other team. Depending on how the Lakers are shooting that game.
Last night he seemed straight on most all his attempts, but off on distance. Based on this, and him shooting 75-80% in practice, I think 60-65% is realistic and very achievable for him this year. At that point teams will likely back off the Hack-a-Dwight anyways.

Re: (Non-Laker fan perspective) Hack-A-Dwight
Maybe we can let him bring the ball up the court, so when the guy comes to foul he can throw up a 3 point attempt and get THREE free throws. Even at 50% we'd be getting 1.5 points per possession.

ballislife wrote:Honestly, I heard one of the LA reporters straight up ask D'Antoni why he leaves Dwight in when teams use this strategy on him, and his answer was pretty stupid. It makes perfect sense... if you're a winner... you sub in your best free throw shooters at the end of the game, especially if you know the other team is using this strategy. He sounds like a fan boy coaching these stars. It's like he's trying to appease them... doesnt care about the result. I honestly think Bickerstaff is a better coach than D'Antoni... he knows how to let these guys just go out and play. Nothing complex... just go out and play.
1. It's not about subbing in a bunch of good free throw shooters, it's simply about taking the one poor FT shooter out. It makes no difference how good the other players are at FT, they're not the ones getting intentionally fouled.
2. Just go out and play- isn't that what D'Antoni is largely doing here?

What is D'Antoni supposed to say? the truth? "we can't bench the future of the franchise because that would piss him off and he would leave, now stop asking idiotic questions". I'm sure that would go over wonderfully. There is nothing you can do about Howard until next year, your franchise will have to be in kiss ass mode and hope you win enough games while catering to him to keep him around.

Re: (Non-Laker fan perspective) Hack-A-Dwight
lol if we got just 1 more stop during hack howard stretch we would have won the game. Dont remember getting any stops at all actually. I think out of 5 or 6 rockets posessions we got just 1 stop. that is whats truly pathetic
Yeah I dont understand why they dont do this. I saw kobe trying to do it though

Having gone through the hack a Howard stuff, you are better off leaving him on the floor.
Howard is just too valuable everywhere else on the floor to sit him.
As for his poor performance at the line, I was content with Howard hitting 60%. His mechanics have always been inconsistent, and his jump shot is worse. He's good in the post, but holds the ball too long and stalls ball movement.
His biggest fail IMO is that Howard has never been able to generate offense for his teammates....witness his paltry 1.9 apg every year. Awful, given the amount of touches he would get in Orlando.

I just want to get rid of the -A- in hack-a-dwight
hack-a-shaq had a ring to it. It should be just Hack Dwight or tackle Dwight or mug Dwight.

jwood255 wrote:I'm a Raptors fan, but I've been following the Lakers since Nash came aboard. I'm not too familiar with the ins and outs of the Lakers, so can someone please explain to me why in the world you guys leave Dwight in there during Hack-A-Dwight? It's been so painful to watch the last few games as this goes on. Why not just bring Jordan Hill in for a few minutes? And once Pau gets back, why not have him be in there instead? I know he's been struggling, but he can't be as bad on the floor as Dwight was on the line.
As for Dwight's free throw shooting...WTF...how is he so bad? The guy needs to focus on the rim a little bit and visualize his shot before he shoots it. He's no where near good enough to just throw the ball at rim and hope something good happens. He doesn't have that unconscious competence and muscle memory. He needs to focus. But I digress...
The main point of this thread: why leave Dwight in the game during Hack-A-Dwight?
One of the reason why D'Antoni won't pull Howard from the game is because of the mental issues involved. It's already humiliating for him to miss all of these free throws, especially with the world watching. Same thing happened to O'Neal. It's human nature to be affected by that. As humiliating as that is, though, it's worse to sit on the bench because of it (look back at O'Neal's face whenever he was pulled for the same reason).
