Seems like this kid needed some more guidance. These actions dont come from nowhere. There's some fundamentally wrong stuff that led to this tragedy.

Nick Van Exel deserves half of the blame for raising a kid like this.

So I guess both of your parent's are half responsible for your ridiculous post and thought process. Sad state in today's society with the need to place blame on someone regardless of who did it. Nick could have been the worst father but in the end this act was committed by a 22yr old adult.

I'm gonna offer some thoughts on what I'm seeing here on page 2 later today. I figured this topic would lead into some of the stuff I'm seeing posted.

Stay tuned...

 I'm so freaking glad you both can make that call that he should shoulder the blame for his son. For crying out loud he's a 22 year old man. So I take it that you both were very close to Nick? If not then how do you know how Nicky was raised. Sometime parents do all they can for their kids and they still turn out to be horrible people. So saying he should take half of the blame is dead wrong, because he wasn't there when his son shot the guy....sometime I wonder....don't even respond back to this, its just something for you thing about
Nice post AD, and for the record I thought those two you quoted was the most ridiculous post so far.

I didn't say he should take half the blame. Nick retired 2006? When his son was 15. People are mentioning that he's a 22 year old adult. Well the way he's raised can mold him into that adult. I see nick on the sidelines of atl games doing what he loves.. But he had 7 years after his playing career to help guide his son. Why do u think nick has tears coming down his eyes? Obviously its a sad situation, but I know he feels he could've helped guide his son so that this would've never happened. Even right after the shooting happened, his son calls nick and nick missed the call. Everyone misses calls but man his son needed him. He takes the mans jordans and jewelry. Then nickey goes to the dead mans mom and says we'll find the killer. I'm just saying family/people should transcend money/jobs. What does all the money in the world mean if your son has to go through 60 years of prison.

The apple fell really far from the tree.

It's a shame that kids born with everything chose to go down this path.

I know nice white kids from the suburbs that came from wealthy, whole, loving families, that ended up selling drugs and joining gangs... They invariably thought they were above the law and were shocked when it came crashing down on them with no way out.
I know girls from similar situations that are killing themselves slowly with Heroine or Meth...
These may be anomalies, but there's enough of them to say you can't make blanket statements about the parents of kids who do horrendous things... It's just way too easy.

I was never a Nick Van Exel fan... I didn't really appreciate him until I looked at his historical stats... I just thought he was a little too arrogant for his skill level. I thought he was often more concerned with the name on the back of his jersey.

That said, that must be devastating as a parent to have to go through that.

Honestly, don't avoid your Jury Duty, it can be an eye opening experience. Especially if you have someone's life in your hands.

Draper wrote:Probably younger than most of the fellas posting in this thread. But I coincidentally started watching the Lakers when I was 7 in 96-97. I remember when my dad took me to get a jersey from the store and I had to decide between a young flashy rookie (KB) jersey and a NVE jersey. I chose the #9, even as a kid I loved his swagger. He played with a great confidence and like Deep said a chip on his shoulder. I was so happy for him when he made the All-Star team in '98 and I'll never forget the times he lit up the old Pepsi Center as a visitor and shut the crowd up.

I heard about his son's trial awhile back and it's sad to see one of my favorite old players go through this. Not sure about all of the details of the trial but regardless I hope the judicial system served it's purpose. As far as placing blame on him, sure a parent has a huge impact on their kids but to say he deserves half of the blame seems like a stretch to me.

FWIW I remember seeing an NBA short awhile back and it seemed like Nick always had a good relationship with his son.

I can totally relate to this post because it basically reflects me growing up. I grew up loving Nick because of his flashy style of play and he was a lefty just like me. I ended up buying a Nick Van Exel jersey and until this day it's my favorite Lakers jersey.

I gotta feel for Nick though. This is a very unfortunate situation for him. No parent deserves to go through that.

I come from a big family 4 boys and 4 girls, we all were raised the same way we all tured out alike, but then there some kids that were raised just like us but once they got out on their own they went down a different path. like the guys I went to school with that murder this old man that lived right down the street from us. What I'm trying to say here is that we are all human and we decide what we want to do if its right or wrong....

Could never understand how someone's misery is funny to some people. You're either very immature or an azzhole. If you have kids just imagine if it were your son. If you don't then keep it that way until you mature.

That's not even remotely funny.
