One game final

Post#1 » by cashflo » Sun Feb 9, 2014 3:56 pm

I started thinking of what a one game NBA final game could do for the game.

Here is a list of positives.

1. Automatic seventh game atmosphere
2. NBA could market it just like the superbowl
3. Non NBA fans would be more intrigued
4. Anyone can win (2001 Allen Iverson)
5. NBA needs to evolve
6. Most nba finals are 4 to 5 games.. 1 big game could be more profitable.
7. Big game can be played anywhere in the nation. Not sure if that is a positive...

Any thoughts ?

I'm not a fan of the Super Bowl from a "may the best team win" perspective. It's an exhibition, really.

Personally, I love the way a series shifts momentum from
game-to-game. It's about adjustments. You'd probably see very conservative basketball if it were just one game.

Terrible idea....the NFL uses one and done rule cause it's too physical to have multiple game series in the playoffs

There's a reason the NBA,NHL,MLB use the 7 game series rule and it's not the money(altough it's part of it)...
That way usually the best team wins(although we have surprises from time to time due to bad matchups for certain teams ,etc)....if it's a 1 game and your done anything can happen(Jazz beat the Heat last game for example...nobody wants to see that,it's a fluke game and that's it)

I wish they would go with a 3-5-5-7 format. First round should be short. Second Round and Conference finals should be 5 games and let the finals be 7.

It's just fine the way it is now

They need to change the playoff format, not series format

Why take away games during the best time of the year? Regardless if you are a basketball fan or not it's still fun to watch those intense games. It's also interesting to see how players respond after a blow out loss or a huge win. That playoff basketball at it's finest.

A one game final is hard to do in the NBA because the players are too good. You need a larger sample size in order to see which team is the better team. A 7-game series is the best way to do it.

In a sport like college basketball, where the school atmosphere plays a big part in the culture, a 1-game knockout is the best option. Add the fact that the players aren't as good as professionals, and it's easier to see which team is better. Hence the constant 30 point blowouts in college on a daily basis.

No thanks. The nfl does it because a long playoff series is too physically demanding. Their regular season is only 16 games.

7 game series is perfect for the nba. I don't think teams want to go through an 82 game regular season and have their championship game decided by 1 game where a player might have an off night.

With a longer series, teams make a number of adjustments to match up better. It's better this way to see who the better team really is

A one game NBA Final would make it interesting for the casual fans because, like the OP pointed out, it'd be similar to the Super Bowl. People could throw parties, act like they know either team and have been fans for a long time, etc., etc.
For real fans, though, guys like the majority of us who will spend an entire day watching a line-up of NBA games, we don't want to see fluke victories in important games. We want to see the best competition possible. I prefer it stay 7 games. It adds excitement game-by-game because you never know what's going to happen next.

And a perfect example of how unpredictable the NBA Finals can be is the 2010 Finals: Lakers vs Celtics.
Ray Allen went off on the Lakers in Game 2, hitting 8 of 11 three-pointers to end the night with 32 points.
What happens the very next game? Ray Allen shoots 0-13 from the field, 0-8 from 3, and scores his only 2 points off of free throws.

That's NBA basketball for you. 7 game series allow things like that to happen. It adds to the enjoyment of never knowing what will really happen.

I know I posted a sarcastic remark, but O.P. Do you realize how many millions of dollars A GAME specially in the playoffs (140 to 160million each series) or finals (20-25Million each game) generates for the NBA/the city/T.V netwroks etc?? The only U.S professional league that uses a one game finals format is the NFL and thats entirely because of the physicality of the sport. Can you imagine them playing 7game series?

An overwhelming response to keep it the way it is. I can see everyone's points but I will say that a one game final would generate so much more excitement. I too would want to watch as many Laker finals as possible but at the same time when other teams play I'm just not as interested. For all the right things the NBA has done there are so many things they have not.(IMO)

Another change I would make is having All Star players wear their teams uniform during the game. I want to see my team represented at the ASG more than the player.

I'd like to see a 5 game series. I think 7 is too long. Or maybe a 3 game in a neutral city... B2B2B
