Lakers to get insurance relief for Kobe and Nash?

Post#1 » by supaflash » Tue Feb 25, 2014 4:22 pm

If I remember the rule right after a player misses 41 games the insurance picks up 80% of the remaining games missed. I think Kobe and Nash are both over the 41 now. With Kobe's projected absence and Nash in and out with the nerve issue it looks like they will save a substantial chunk of money, north of 10 mil. Can anyone confirm this and how it works?

I wonder if this had anything to do with them being more demanding at the trade deadline? Between this and what they saved on the Blake deal it gives them a little bit more incentive going forward. Everyone says its not a big deal with the big TV contract but they still seem to be wary of spending and luxury tax. If they don't spend this summer and save some more money next year they could really go all out in 15 and 16, which seems like the plan currently.

BTW is there any breakdown of the current contracts AND cap holds for lottery picks?

Key part of that is that it doesn't effect the cap... So it's not much of a concern for the Lakers at this point.

That's the article I remember reading thanks.

Yeah I know it doesn't affect the cap, but 15 mil savings is 15 mil savings. It could make firing D'antoni hurt less if they go that direction, it could make it possible to buy picks if they come available, it could make going into luxury tax next season hurt a bit less as well.
