If the CBA had no maximum salary (but had current cap rules in place), what kind of 5-year offer would you make to Lebron, or do you think other teams would make to Lebron?
I think the entire NBA free agency landscape would be dramatically different. It would be much much harder to assemble teams with 2 superstars (much less 3), in a good way I think as there would be more competitive teams. Many teams would spend resources to try to land their 1 superstar player, and build a supporting cast. That could actually enough.
Lebron is the best player in the league by a significant amount, and a true free market salary would reflect that. The team that lands him would have less money for the rest of the roster, but would be a more attractive target for other players as well. Such a team could/should be competitive for a title (especially with a couple of good young players still under rookie contracts), since talent would be more spread out generally in the league.
I think Lebron would get multiple offers in the range of 5 years/ $200M. Someone like Carmelo might get an offer right about the current max contract IMO. The Lakers would be in a position to make a huge offer to Lebron, so was curious what people would offer him.
If there was no max salary, what would you offer Lebron?

Re: If there was no max salary, what would you offer Lebron?
Sorry, it's a thought experiment not just about Lebron, but about superstar players and their actual worth, vs. current max contracts. A lot of people don't like how the Big 3 came together in Miami, I don't think there's anything wrong with what they did, but either way it's the result of the max contract. If you limit a player's financial upside, then other upsides are going to come into play.
If it's too redundant then I can delete the thread. But I am curious about what people would really pay for Lebron if there was no limit dollar-wise (since signing him to the current max deal is a no-brainer for any team in the league.)
