Trading/signing vets for next year?

Post#1 » by aaron_gray » Mon Jan 19, 2015 11:33 am

As many are aware, there have been trade rumors about Brook Lopez as well some speculation on Luol Deng. Realistically speaking, neither would propel this team into a 50 win contender (A.K.A the minimum required to make the playoffs in the West). It would be somewhat of an upgrade over what's looking like another 20 win team next year. So here are some interesting things to consider about that route, which involve chasing vets in the 8-12 mil ball park:

-It's Kobe's last year.

-If the Lakers keep their pick this year, than they are almost certainly giving the pick to Phoenix next year.

-Trading for a vet under contract would almost certainly mean giving up assets.

-A impact vet in free agency will most likely be looking for a long term contract when gauging the Lakers situation. This isn't some win now team that he can go ring chasing with.

-A ball dominant vet could potentially take shots away from Randle/top 5 pick

-By the time Randle/top 5 pick peaks, the vet will be well past his prime and if he's signed in free agency, he will most likely still be under contract.

So where do you guys stand on signing/trading for vets like that?

i hate this losing and it took me a while to accept the fact but the reality is... we aint goin nowhere. we MUST keep the pick this year and get Dragic and Marc. can you imagine the ball movement? *drools* i do believe that we have a lot of players who are being plugged in the starting role but would be solid contributors off the bench. acquiring starter-allstar caliber players is key this offseason.

the only trades we should do is our expirings for prospects and picks... unless another gasol deal presents itself.

Dragic/Kobe/Wes/Randle/Gasol

With Kobe's deal on the books, the lakers do not have the ability to realistically get two high caliber players like gasol and Dragic. A max gasol deal would leave less under 10 mil open for any other player, which Dragic's price tag should easily surpass.

Realistically the lakers will probably use their cap to gain assets from teams trying to dump players. Ideally those players have some type of potential to increase their value.

The Lakers need to trade for guys on their rookie contracts who are running out of time with their current team, not injury prone max guys who can't stay on the court.

Ty, acquiring Terrance Ross would be fantastic. How would that deal look though?

Teams usually aren't looking to give away players still on their rookie deal. They're usually more interested in getting value in return or just riding out the player's contract in hopes he lives up to whatever potential they initially saw.

Which players did you have in mind and at what price tag? Something like the Austin rivers deal?

Off the top of my head... looking for rotation guys to just plug a star in FA...

Ross, Plumlee, Stauskas, Snell, just to name a few. Alot of contenders looking for bodies to go on their playoff chase. I'll expand later today.

The typical rebuilding model is not a requirement.

You don't have to have a team of JUST young players in order to be rebuilding. What you need is a team of solid guys who, like doc said, can potentially raise their value.

You need a team--a well-balanced group of guys who have intangibles and whose energy meshes as one.

Regardless of their age, you need guys that are versatile, with the ability to offensively and defensively play different positions. To illustrate this point, I'd much rather have a career role player-guy like Demarre CarrolI for 8 million than Nick Young for 5. Why? Because guys like Carroll are invaluable in establishing a culture. Guys like Carroll help to make a group of players into a team and for that he's worth the extra money over a younger and "more talented" Nick Young.

If the Lakers lose their draft pick and are left with just Randle and a couple of borderline first rounders on the roster, they'll be fine.

That's what I was getting at. Although Ross is playing like crap and Casey has him in a doghouse in favor of James Johnson, Toronto has no incentive to let him go ... even for a serviceable big man like Jordan Hill.

My hesitation is that the lakers don't have assets to give up. Their only viable asset is the ability to trade expiring deals like Nash, hill, and Lin for two year contracts. Hence the Jennings and Lopez reports.

With players on rookie deals, dumping their contracts isn't such a big deal for their respective teams, thus the lakers offering to take on their contract isn't that big of a commodity.

There are plenty of logjams in the NBA and other situations where good players just don't seem to fit. Goran Dragic would be the first player I go after. Marc Gasol definitely. Lance Stephenson would be another one…although he is not a high IQ player, he's still talented enough if he gets his head screwed on right. Jimmy butler doesn't seem like a max player but he's still a wonderful player to have. SG's just come too often, but he'll probably be signed for a pretty big contract.

Jimmy Butler
Lance Stephenson
Julius Randle

Just trade for #1 picks. can always add those to trade for a better player. Mitch seems to spend the #1 picks like he does not want them. Maybe he has finally learned that we need them more than old max type players.
