Knicks looking to drive up Clarkson's price...

If they want to be fools and tie up a sizeable portion of their cap for a few days on a player we won't let go, then so be it.

Thing is if they do it on July 1st we cant wait and go over the cap to sign clarkson after the major free agents. We have 7 days to match so if Durant and whatever Free agents we have to pick up to get him to agree to come would have to be done within that 7 days or it hurts our cap space. Where as if he didn't sign an offer sheet until after the big targets figure out where they are going we could go over the cap to sign him. That is the only potential problem with the knicks offer sheet even though realistically it may not matter when Lakers sign him.

It's only a difference of 3m..2.8m is his cap hold, and about 6m (or nontax paying MLE) is what he'd cost us if we match.

The salary counted against the cap is averaged for the team making the offer, say the Knicks, but for the team matching the offer, the Lakers, the salary hit is face value per year, so only a 6m hit this coming season, 6-something w marginal raise the following season, then the big balloon payments afterwards.

So, perfect for us, and a big reason why Clarkson isn't going anywhere, even if you don't love him (unless via trade, for an offer we can't refuse).

There's the moratorium, on July 1st everyone becomes free agents but contracts cannot be signed until July 7th. By then all of the big name UFAs will already be committed to teams.
