I'd say equal parts passing to guys who couldn't handle the pass and getting himself into the teeth of the defense. I don't think it was like last years sloppy all the time lack of focus*Was Deng keeping up on defense?
Yes, though he wasn't very assertive and looked like a vet who isn't trying to prove anything in preseason game 1*Was Clarkson getting others involved in the offense for the second unit?
No he didn't ball stop but he was acting mostly as a shooting guard looking to score*Was Randle putting his head down and going to the basket when he got the ball?
pretty clear that he got the notice about not iso'ing in this scheme. He was looking to hit open jumpers and did some nice cutting without the ball, but I didn't see much of his coast to coast handle and drive. His jumper does look better and I predict he'll either flourish or flounder based on his confidence in it. If he misses a bunch and starts thinking about it, I think he'll suffer mightily but he definitely has better form and the first 20 footer was great.*Did black shoot any jump shots or were all of his attempts right at the rim?
I don't recall any range from him. He had a pretty clear athletic advantage and was mostly son'ing people in the paint.
I'd add that Russell had a couple TOs that were him trying to draw fouls that ultimately weren't called for him.
He's gonna have a lot of turnovers this year, being that he'll be the focus of defenses, is 20/in his second year, and will have the ball a ton, but in game 1 our starters were doing a lot of bobbling passes, dribbles, everything seemed a little out of rhythm and it affected the offense/flow. That will improve as the first game jitters subside.
Which also goes into WV's question about Randle, he didn't catch the ball cleanly on a number of instances and it made it hard to judge much of what his offense this season is going to look like. It was encouraging they were looking to move the ball, but too small of a sample size.
There are a lot of questions that still need to be answered about these guys that game 1 did not really shed light on.
Interesting point about Deng. I hope he kicks it up a notch in the season, because he seemed to be a wallflower aside from the 3 D'Angelo created for him.
