D'Angelo Russell has been one of the least pampered guys out of the lottery, from the 2015 draft.

Mudiay got a ton of minutes.
Booker got a botload of minutes.
Towns got a lot of minutes.
Porzingis got a lot of minutes.
Winslow got a lot of minutes.
Okafor got a lot of minutes when Embiid wasn't around.
Turner got a lot of minutes.

D'Angelo has been getting squat....as soon as he made a mistake last year, his ass was riding the bench...

He didn't get the chance others are getting.

This.

I think he's about to turn the corner. He needs to pick up his intensity a notch in general. I think that'll take care of most of it. When he's into it, he's a warrior. Maybe hire E.T.'s insult sparring coach to fire him up before every game start?

Based on what they have done it's not really a debate. Potential is just that as far as I'm concerned. With that said you can't really find evaluate the draft unit year 3 typically.

Porzingis is a unique talent. That size/skill set don't come along very often. He's also got an innate feel for the game on both ends.

Russell is more of a raw talent that needs a lot of focused direction to get to his full potential. I'm not sold that he's got the right mental approach/make up.

Different positions and much different players.

Hard to say anyome couldve predicted prozingis would be at the level hes at after 1.5 yrs. technically, russel was the BPA and porzingis would have been a reach.

Completely agree. KP has, and is playing more minutes than D'Lo. So, it's an unfair comparison. D'Lo is playing 25 mins per game this year. Kristaps is playing 34 mins per game.

Surprisingly their Per 36 numbers are actually pretty similar.
D'Lo Per 36: 21pts, 6 asts, 4rebs (Regular numbers: 15pts, 4asts, 3rbs)
KP per 36: 21pts, 8rebs, 1.5 asts

I hate this narrative. Porzingus was never on our radar. No chance we drop Okafor and Russel to get him. Porz at 4 was already sort o a reach at the time.

I remember when people were talking about Mudiay over Russel. Smh. Right now Porz is a better player. But by how much? I actually do prefer Russel right now still considering our options with Randle/Nance/INGRAM.

I think it would take homer glasses to see Russell over Porzingis now or into the future. But the general thought going into the draft was Towns, Okafor, Russell, Mudiaye. Within that reality, picking Russell 2nd was an above average, B grade.

How does that make you better than the Lin, Gallo, and Wil fans who root for them over NY?

FWIW, drafting Porzingis mightve knocked the lakers out of the #2 pick (Ingram) the following year.

This is what I appreciate most about Byron. He would never let us fail so as to lose the #2 pick

It's going to take a few years to figure out player comparisons for Russell's draft class. But Numbers wise, what does a good year for Russell look like?

Per36

23pts
6ast
5rebs
45% Fg
40% 3pt

You mean for this season? I'd agree. He's almost there, he's just got to improve his efficiency.

21.2pts
6.5ast
4.3rebs
40.1% fg
38.8% 3pt

lake_show wrote:Same here... Not hurt at all. Don't see why anyone would be. Glad KP is doing well but we didn't have the luxury of being able to take a flyer on an unknown prospect with the number 2 overall pick. Plus, it's not like we got Darko Milicic, or Johnny Flyn in the deal. D'Lo has shown he can play.

There's a whole lot of anti-Laker fans out there who really really really want us to be salty about this. I'm not tho. I'd like to see those guys write a "Is Philly salty they passed on KP?" article. Not gonna happen, because the Philly name doesn't get them all worked up like the Laker name does, and Philly doesn't sell articles the way the Laker name does.

A lot of Knick fans hated that pick. Cried about how that single pick had ruined their franchise lol. Good for KP for showing them how dumb and wrong they are. Glad he's doing good. He's a great player.

This is the difference between us. Sure, I don't see how we (us fans) could have picked Porzingis with the info we had available to us. But I expect more out of the Lakers brass. If KP was the right pick, which to me its evident he is, then I expect Mitch and company to get it right. They worked KP out. Scouted him. Put him in various drills. They saw the mobility he had as a 7'3 forward and he could also knock down threes. For all the pain and strife we had to endure to get that pick -- I'm not letting Mitch and co off the hook. They needed to have the foresight and vision to see KPs true potential.

To add to this, would KP have developed as much in his rookie year under a Byron Scott?

KP is talented enough to still have been good.

Honestly, a couple of my friends that are anti-Lakers try to mock me by saying the Lakers passed on Porzingis. It doesn't bother me. I was happy with the pick then and I am happy about the pick now. They're 20.
