Skills, leadership, mental toughness.
Plenty of hall of fame point guards weren't great athletes, but they had the other attributes, including Jason Kidd, Steve Nash, John Stockton, and even Steph Curry.
If you don't have any of the above, then you're probably not a great PG. Not rocket science.
If you're trying too hard to find greatness, you probably don't have greatness.

So typically I give them the time until their rookie contract is up. Until then I won't advocate trading them, but if we are getting a legit star in a trade I will strongly consider trading DLo and Randle. Not that I don't like them, but let's be realistic, the other team will ask for them as they have the best trade value in our team right now. Right now for me Ingram and Zubac are untouchables. Yeah, I know for some people here Ingram is under achieving but I still keep my hopes high on him (as what I've said I'm patient with our youngsters) the tools are there I'm just betting that he still needs a little more time. I liked Zubac from the start especially because he really wants to be a Laker. I even wanted him to start from the get go. Considering their age and abilities and skills at this point this two could be very dangerous in years to come. I still hope DLo somehow plays a SG role so we can see what he can do in that spot. So we could somehow evaluate in what guard position he excels more.
It's rough. We have never been bad like this. Mutliple years out....some bad contracts, fans are pretty desperate for SOMETHING. I'm right there with them.
The thing I would say on Russells behalf, is that not only does he come out young, but he comes out to a team without any veteran leadership (sorry, Moz, Deng, Young, Williams are not leaders). He's having to find his way along side several other guys doing the same...and coach to boot! I think things would be easier/better for Russell if he was on a team already "planted".
It's a tough spot, no doubt. Rough for the fans...rough for the players. Russell and Ingram are the #2 picks....it get's piled on them more. They just gotta play through. It doesn't get easier. The better you become, the more nuanced the criticisms become. Kobe "didn't make his teammates better" is quite a hard-to-quantify complaint about a 5-time champ. Peeps will find a way.
Russell just needs to look at his bank account if he starts feeling lonely and sad. I can show him mine, so he has something to compare it to. That aughta cheer the feller up.

J.Kidd was a phenomenal athlete. He had the ability guard your best player, get in there grab a board, push it up the floor and choose whether to accelerate or decelerate and change directions on a dime, was strong, and could dunk on top of his iq and basketball skills. Hell the guy came back from microfracture surgery amazingly quick too when you consider he went down in game 7 vs Detroit and was back before the calendar year had even ended. HE adjusted his body to a more of a shooter role after that but Kidd in his first Dallas run, Phoenix, and early NJ had that juice. He also had perfect body control because if you truly remember, you know he left his feet half the time for behind the back, bounce, no look, over the shoulder, and off the glass passes all while using his hang time to wait for the perfect time to zip it.
I still hate the fact to this day that Shaq didn't want JAson Kidd on his team as that was the original trade for Van Exel before Shaq threw a hissy

Kidd from Dallas.
Jerry West has said before in a podcast that when they originally had tried decided to deal Van Exel before his Cancun comments, they had made the call and worked out a deal with Dallas which they felt worked for them, Jason Kidd for Nick Van Exel. They then went to Shaq to let him know before the press and he told them he didn't want JKidd on his team and Van Exel was his guy.
Del Harris also at the time said he wanted to keep nick as kidd was having those issues with the other players in Dallas and he didn't want chemistry issues. It was also in the LA times back then and Del had issues with KIDD's lack of shooting, which in itself is silly since Nick couldn't throw a pea in the ocean in the playoffs vs Stockton
It is the biggest what if for me. I mean J.Kidd, Kobe, and Shaq wouldn't be close to being matched if you keep them together.

Off the head, I believe it was Tony Battie and Tyron Lue from Denver ... might've been a second round pick included as well.

This is so unbelievable that I almost don't believe it. You do Van Exel for Kidd in your sleep.

Phoenix went on to swing deals for both Jason Kidd and Penn Hardaway. Dallas would later get Van exel from Denver to add to Michael Finley. Dallas wanted out their original roster as back then all over woman problems
